Moosehead Lake and Islands

Three of several seaplanes

We arrived at the Balsam Woods Campground in Abbott Village after a very pleasant drive from Dixfield. We were pleasantly surprised at the size of the sites and the privacy of each site. We were situated next to the pool which provided entertainment thru our stay. The owners are very young (28 and 22) and are doing a great job with the camp. They have initiated some nice activities, including a wagon ride thru the 300 acre camp, ice cream social, outdoor movie night and a pancake breakfast on the weekend. We participated in all of that, and enjoyed each activity.

A drive north to Moosehead Lake was in order, and Judie was really watching for moose. No luck, but she did take a picture of a moose caution sign. The drive included a lunch in a delightful spot, the Black Frog. The floating dock section was full of HOG bikers eating and having a big time. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the humor shared in that spot.

We now know that Moosehead Lake is a well-known seaplane lake, in fact, we missed the ‘big fly-in’ by one week. Greenville (with the Black Frog) is a thriving resort town at the southern tip of the lake. However, Rockwood, the town half-way up the western edge, was almost deserted. There does appear to be a sort of ferry to the islands in the lake that are inhabited.

Monday morning, the weather co-operated with our attempts to fly the helicopter. This was the ‘maiden flight’ for the craft and we each had success in flight. Ed reached the altitude of 8 feet and brought it down safely. Judie reached the altitude of the limb in the tree. After a bit of working on the rotors, we were able to fly it a little bit more. We felt pleased with our efforts, and are watching for more ‘fair weather flying’ moments.

Tuesday morning we headed for Freeport, ME, where we will be while Ed works. Judie plans to shop and quilt a baby blanket.
