Garden City RV Park, Skagway, Alaska.

Carcross to Skagway

Last night we decided to go ahead and drive down to Skagway for a few days in the RV instead of just one day in the Yukon like we had originally planned. I walked over to the office to pay for our campsite and asked if it would be OK if we checked out around 1:30 this afternoon. The lady was real nice about it and said “Sure” so that was nice. Jonathan officially started our homeschool year off today while Tom worked. We pulled out around 2:00 local time and headed down into Skagway.

The drive was beautiful. The terrain was different but it was really pretty. We stopped at Fraser where the White Pass train station is just before Customs. It was perfect timing. We hadn't been there but about five minutes and we heard the train whistle. A train was coming up from Skagway to drop off passengers to catch the buses that were waiting to take them up into Carcross and Whitehorse for the day. We were able to watch from a point up above while the engines switched tracks and then hitched back up to the other end of the train ready to pull it back down into Skagway again. We got back in the RV at that point, went through Customs, then drove on in. The scenery has just been beautiful.

Once we got into the campsite, we set things up then went to pay for it. I asked the owner where he would recommend we go to dinner around town and he sent us to a place called the Skagway Fish Co. We drove down there and walked around a little bit outside first. There were four cruise ships in the harbor. The area down there is landscaped very nicely and they have a marina so we just walked around a little bit taking it all in. We didn't have to wait long for a table so that was nice. The food was wonderful! Best meal and atmosphere we've had in all of Alaska. I ordered king crab legs. Tom had halibut and Jonathan ordered clam chowder.

I thought we were heading back to the RV but Tom passed the campground right by so we were off on a trek of some kind. He had something up his sleeve. We drove up to Dyea and the Chilkoot Trail to take a look. We didn't get out to do any walking around because his back is still bothering him but we had a nice ride and now I know where things are so Jonathan and I can come during the day if we want to. We took a turn at one point that took us up a road where we were glad we had 4-wheel drive. We saw moose tracks and stopped at one point to listen to the rapids in the stream down below us. We went until there was no more road to drive on then turned around and headed back.

There's a look out point on the way back into town that looks down over the town from way up on the mountain. We stopped there just before two of the cruise ships pulled out so we got some nice shots of Skagway at night with the ships in the harbor.
