After leaving Badlands we headed to a town called Wall to check out the drug store there. The reason for this is they had billboards all the way across South Dakota advertising everything from 5 cent coffee to T-Rex so we had to see what the fuss was about. Wall Drug took up about a quarter of the commercial space in Wall and was jam packed. Every souvenir known to man was available along with a full dining area, and yes even 5 cent coffee.
From Wall we headed to Mt Rushmore. First we stopped in Keystone for a walk around and dinner then headed up to the monument. With the sky overcast and rain threatening we took some photos and walked the trail before spending time in the RV until the evening ceremony and lighting took place. It was now raining and so we waited as long as we could before heading up to see the monument lit up. Unfortunately the rain made it difficult to see the features of the faces so ended up not taking night photos.
The next day we headed into Wyoming and a stop at Devils Tower. This was the setting of the alien landing in Close Encounters so it was good to see no spaceship landing site here. It has given us the thought to watch the movie again. It is very impressive and beautiful to see and we enjoyed the walk around the base, taking many photos.
The surrounding area is also stunning with a mixture of grasslands and red rock. We had a bonus view of the Tower as we were leaving with black clouds coming in, giving it an erie feeling. In one moment I captured a shot with the sun breaking through behind the Tower sending sun beams out to the side. I love magic moments like that.
On the drive out we were graced with a beautiful rainbow which we also took many photos of. Stunning...
