Mantnuska Glacier, a big one

Wrangell Mountains behind Kenny Lake

Bridal Veil Falls in Keystone Canyon

Horsetail Falls just down the canyon

We pulled out of the Anchorage RV Park on a beautiful, sunny day. The Glenn Highway runs east and west between Anchorage and Glennallen where you pick up the Richardson Highway for the rest of the trip into Valdez. Most of the journey to Glennallen was quite an adventure. There was construction through a lot of the mountainous area. The surface wasn't bad, but it was narrow with a 6 to 8 inch drop-off on the shoulder. About half way to Glennallen we came upon the Mantanuska Glacier. This is a huge land-locked glacier that comes down from the Chugach Mountains into the Mantanuska River Valley.

As we got further east, we could see the Wrangell Mountains that are east of Glennallen. They are beautiful. We would have a better view of them on the way south to Valdez. The highway over Thompson Pass and down to Valdez is absolutely awesome. It parallels the Lowe River through Keystone Canyon where the sheer rock cliffs offer breathtaking views of Bridal Veil Falls and Horsetail Falls. A long, fairly steep grade takes you on down into the beautiful port city of Valdez.

We checked into the busy Eagle's Rest RV Park where we will spend a few days exploring the area. We had heard good things about the Glacier and wildlife cruise on the Lulu Belle so we went ahead and reserved a spot for the next day.

For more about Valdez and the Lula Belle, check back later. See ya then.........
