Knik Arm, part of the Cook inlet

An old derelect boat on the Knik Arm

Day 42, Tuesday, June 05, 2012

It was a fairly short journey today. We drove about 60 uneventful miles south to Wasilla. We are staying at the Big Bear RV Park right between Wasilla and Palmer. It’s a beautiful day here, sunshine and about 63 degrees. We’ve been watching coverage on the TV of the transit of Venus that couldn’t be seen down there. We didn’t have the special glasses we need to watch for real. Venus is moving across the face of the sun right now and won’t do it again for another 130 something years. We drove down the Knik-Goose road and got one great view of the mountains and Knik Arm which is part of the Cook Inlet and is ocean water! Tell Mom I’ve been looking for her friend, Sarah Palin, but haven’t seen her. Maybe I’ll catch her at Walmart tomorrow.

Coming south, we have added 2 hours of daylight. The sun sets around 11:30 and rises about 4:30 in the morning. Generally, it's cloudy when we go to bed but tonight the sun is shining brightly at almost 11:00. We have trouble with our directions too because the sun isn't where it's supposed to be. It seems that the sun rises and sets in the north.
