This update covers one of the beautiful scenic drives in the area. We have driven many and still have quite a few planned for later. The last time we were in South Dakota, we visited Mount Rushmore and walked down the row of flags etc. This time we decided to do the scenic drive around the park. We had a great time, we stopped at several pull offs and could not believe the views. It is amazing!
Just consider – the work of this massive carving, the largest monument in the world, was accomplished during the time of the great national challenge and hardship – the Great Depression of the 1930’s. Between October 4, 1927 and October 31, 1941, Gutzon Borgium and 400 workers sculpted the colossal faces of U.S. presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln to represent the first 150 years of the great experiment of democracy which is America.
The four great faces continue to meet each dawn with pride and glory. It is one of the most amazing things we have seen. I hope you enjoy all the pictures, it was a “wowser” day in South Dakota, check back later for more.
