Hello, North Island! We had an uneventful drive up to Picton in the morning. We got to the ferry at about 11:30 am, and didn’t need to be there until 1, so we spent the time in the terminal, using their free wifi to upload the journal, check email, etc.
We are becoming very much out of touch with the world news. We did hear about the missing plane, and maybe it has been found off the coast of Australia. Our internet access is pretty limited. Usually we have to pay, and that only gives us access on one device, so that is usually the laptop, so we take turns. The journal and photos live on the laptop. I can use my iPad for email, if I have access on that (usually only briefly), and also for news. My phone is not receiving email. I don’t know why. It also doesn’t access the internet. Again, I don’t know why. It does work as a phone, when I am in range.
As soon as we got off the ferry, we turned left and headed for the nearby Wellington Waterfront Motorhome Park. It is not very big (I think about 40 vehicles maximum) and it doesn’t take large vehicles. It is $50 per night, with power (or without), and it is a parking lot downtown (with the mandated 3 meters between vehicles, so we are basically parked every other space). This is easily the most expensive place we have stayed in the campervan, but it is convenient to explore the city on Saturday, and downtown parking is expensive. We do have toilets and showers (coded), but no kitchen (which we don’t need). We also have no internet (supposedly there is a free city internet, but I haven’t been able to get on). Maybe tomorrow we can communicate at a museum or i-Site.
