San Agustin itself was a bit of a disappointment - it was bigger and more touristy than we'd expected, but the area surrounding it is incredible! We spent a very interesting afternoon looking around the nearest archeological site, with a guide who was able to point out all the things about the many, many statues that we would otherwise have missed (and also offered us land for sale and a whole range of other services, including hallucenagenic shaman rituals, and lessons in picking magic mushrooms and purifying cocaine! - only in Colombia!!!). The following day we took a tour by jeep to visit some of the other sites, and many more statues. We also visited two gorgeous waterfalls, and a little girl that we met took us to her home to see her mum's herb garden, and then across the road to see panela (boiled down sugar cane) being made.
