Tennessee Aquarium on the Chattanooga Riverfront

Lookout Mountain from the Riverboat

Paul at the Chickamauga Battlefield

The next day it was north to Chattanooga which is located at the foot of Lookout Mountain on the banks of the Tennessee river. We had been here before to visit Lookout Mountain and Rock City where Lover's Leap and the 7 States Flag Court afford scenic views of seven states. The newly renovated riverfront is home to the Tennessee Aquarium and the Southern Belle Riverboat. During the sightseeing cruise on this old riverboat, we enjoyed an informative commentary on the city's history as we floated down the beautiful Tennessee River. Familiar sights like Lookout Mountain and Chattanooga's skyline will never look the same.

Before leaving Chattanooga, we took a quick tour of the Chickamauga Battlefield. On these fields and hills, Union and Confederate armies clashed during the fall of 1863 in some of the hardest and bloodiest fighting of the Civil War. The prize was Chattanooga, key rail center and gateway to the heart of the Confederacy. After many intense skirmishes and bloody battles at Chickamauga and those at Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge and Orchard Knob the Union took control of Chattanooga and used it as a base for it's march to Atlanta and the sea. Both sides lost many lives in these battles.

We pressed on to the west so we could get a little closer to home. One more day and we will be there. Tomorrow......
