Well the day has arrived to load the RV and head west. It feels a long time coming and the shorter trips have been beneficial in working out what to take and what we may encounter.
By early afternoon on Wednesday we headed back to Philly for an evening with Amy's sister and brother in law. They are a great couple and I enjoy their company. We had our first experience watching 3D TV and had some minor computer issues resolved by Mark.
Thursday started with a brunch in Philadelphia at an Aussie owned cafe called The Ants Pants. Felt really good to introduce flat whites to my family here and enjoy a BLAT. After breakfast we headed to Lancaster County which is one of the main areas in US where the Amish community live.
Very interesting to experience the countryside and how they live. Their mode of transportation is either horse & buggy or scooters, which makes for added dimensions when driving. We toured a family home that included a mock up schoolroom and watched a movie showing the history of the Amish.
Leaving Lancaster County we spent the night on the outskirts of Gettysburg, the town centred in a pivotal battle in the Civil War. This was an unbelievable experience, seeing the fields where so many men died and getting close looks at where both sides took up camp.
The town has done well to preserve the land and tell the history of the 3 day battle. The monuments respect all who fought here, no matter which side, in a very heartening way.
