Mission San Juan Capistrano is most famous for the annual return of the swallows after spending the winter in South America. On March 19, every year to the date, the swallows return to Capistrano.
But ... today they weren't here ... "a hard thing to swallow" ... ha, ha!!!
This mission was established on November 1, 1776. The original stone church was destroyed on Dec 8, 1812 ... 195 years ago today. During a feast day morning mass an earthquake struck, destoying the church, which was never rebuilt ... only a portion of the orignal building is still standing.
Lots of history here ... from the indigenous people to the missionaries to the present day members of this mission. An interesting visit ... a beautiful place.
