We knew that Koh Tao would be very touristy, and that the coral would be in a sad state, but it's one of the cheapest places to dive in the world, so a good place to work on our skills - and the blue sea, white beaches and sunshine aren't horrible!! We took the overnight sleeper boat from Surat Thani which was very communal(!), but surprisingly comfortable (except for the child kicking Tara all night). We arrived at about 7am immediately went investigating all the dive companies. We checked almost every dive company on Sai Ree beach and did not really fine one that we were comfortable with. So we decided to hire a scooter and head for the next bay, Chalok Baan Kao.
We bumped into James there, a dive instructor we'd met on the sleeper boat, and he managed to talk us in to staying and doing the Rescue Diver course with him - he even convinced Da to do it!! We had a lovely little bungalow free and for six nights, and were happy to be staying on this more relaxed (and very beautiful) bay. We started our first-aid course straight away and then spent the next few days fun diving, practicing our skills and completing the rescue scenarios. We're both much better divers now, and Tara is looking forward to becoming a Divemaster sometime in the future (Da's still thinking about it!).
