We took the ferry across from New London, Rhode Island to Long Island. It is just a typical crossing of about one hour but, for some reason our ferry was escorted the whole way by two coastguard vessels, each of which had a machine gun mounted to the bow and a guard manning each gun! They looked extremely menacing as they flanked our ferry for the whole journey. We could not believe this was standard practice and were, therefore, just left speculating as to the reason for such a high profile presence.

We drove the length of Long Island towards New York city, stopping off at Oyster Bay (famous as Billy Joel's home town!). We overnighted in Commack.
