13 June Sunday.
No trucks on the auto route so it was a quick ride back to La Spezia. It was a headache finding the train station and to find a park nearly impossible and we found out the trains were striking today. So we decided to drive to Riomaggiore.Good easy drive there but the carparks in little village were closed so we parked up on the road with a few locals and found a few shortcut stairs down to Village number 1-Riomaggiore. Quite an effort but we had made it. Cinque Terre is a national park. Five little villages walking distance apart with stunning views of the Meditterranean. We walked from Riomaggiore to Manarola along via dell‘Amore -the lovers walk (that was romantic with four kids)..Then walked onto Corniglia where at the end we climbed 300 odd steps.( Lachie counted them all) So a coke and gelato was just reward. From here we jumped on the train that links all villages and went onto the next one-Vernazza. We were hot and tired. This village was lovely. Dad and Lachs stripped off and swam in the harbour. Warm and refreshing. We caught the train to the last village Monterosso,.which was more commercial and riviera style, so didn’t stay long. There were train delays so lots of people waiting. When the train finally arrived it was everyone on and squeeze up tight to get back to Riomaggiore. Last walk up to the car …lost count of steps..Whew!.
Fast drive home to Lucca. But they had locked the gate at 8pm so we couldn’t get the car in.There were others locked out as well. What a pain.Disgusted we went in search of food and found a wonderful Pizza place nearby who made the pizza from a ball of dough in front of you..cooks great entertainers and really lovely to our boys. With very full tummies we headed back to fort knocks for our last night in Lucca.
