Tacy Dinner

Ft. Jefferson

Lutie kayaking

The morning turned wet and windy at our anchorage near Point Judith. Rather than wait for things to calm, we pushed out thru the west breakwater toward Stonington, CT. Cousin Barbara and Peter Tacy are our hosts in this lovely township. With their affiliation at the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club, we had the royal treatment. The stay was also timed for the embark of Bill's sisters for a while. Lutie was going to be with us thru to Atlantic City while Mary brought the car along for support, and planned to make a few strategic casino stops along the way. Barbara met us on arrival and had us settled in with the staff. Jean did laundry and the four of us had a nice dinner together at "Go Fish" a favorite Mystic restaurant. Lunch the next day was at "The Dog Watch", followed by a wonderful meal at the Tacy residence in Mystic. This is always an expansive time to cover all the family updates as well as plan for the future.

Throughout our Stonington stay, the weather was dark and somewhat stormy. The same was true as we pushed off on Thursday morning for the race beyond Fishers Island. Our trip was on a kindly tide and following wind and this all led to the late discovery of a major engineering problem. Our main engine exhaust is cooled by salt water thru an installed impeller driven pump. The five year old impeller finally ate itself down to a nub and we were so involved with other things that we failed to register the high temperatures on the exhaust. Our evening mooring at Port Jefferson gave a chance to work on a solution as Lutie and Jean discovered some really great places in town. We continued to nurse the high temps and deteriorated exhaust piping the next day where the anchorage was in Manhasset Bay. At this point all of us needed a swim and a kayak ride to regain perspective. The trip has proven to be a wonderful time for Bill and Lutie to catch up on family. Tomorrow we would face the dreaded "Hell Gate" and the majestic New York skyline and we needed to be in top form.
