A bit of a sheepish confession from me - it was a sheepdog, not a sheep - the photos will explain it all!

We’ve spent the past three days camping beside beautiful lakes and rivers in the hills between Rotorua and the east coast. We were planning to head south to Lake Taupo, but were tempted east by promises of excellent trout streams – more of which later.

We enjoyed some excellent long walks up streams, over ridges and into hidden valleys. Pete described one of these walks as “Ali’s routemarch”, but we both enjoyed the views, birdsong and wet feet from the river crossings. Another day I walked on my own while Pete went fishing in the river: we enjoyed chicken for our dinner that evening.

Pre-breakfast swims in lakes were also a feature (for some – Pete took the photos).

We are now back in civilisation in Gisborne. We decided it was time to treat ourselves to a dinner out. We both got scrubbed up, put on make up and proper shoes and headed into town about 8.30. After a lengthy walk we discovered that restaurants shut by 9 and we ended up in the local curry house. Tasty, but not quite what we had in mind!
