Our final stop on the way back to Oak Bottom was the Super WalMart just outside Reno before we hit the CA border. We shopped for three weeks of groceries, bought 6 cases of diet pepsi for Cheryl so we wouldn't have to pay the CA can tax, and I bought a new fishing rod and 6 of the Mapps spinners the Salmon like so much. They are always getting caught on rocks and lost. The Forest Service made us a real nice Camp Host sigh made out of inch thick Cedar to hang on the front of our 5th Wheel, see pic, Thank you Six Rivers National Forest. On Sunday Aug 19 the Bear Cub that has been sporadically wandering through our campground but who used to be skittish decided he wasn't any more and stayed around long enough for a photo visit, see pics. On the previous Friday he took a campers cooler that was ratchet strapped to their picnic table and tore the end off of it and gradually worked it loose, the campers came back as he was hauling it into the woods and scared him off. We have a shed behind us and I am now offering to store campers coolers when they leave the campground - most of our campers drive pick-ups and have no place to lock up the cooler when they are rafting down the river. Labor Day Weekend was almost a disaster ... we had two young men in one site that were drinking, I don't know what they put into their fire ring but all of a sudden I saw flames going up about 10 feet high and red hot cinders drifting up to and hitting the tree canopy about 30 feet above. As you can guess we are in HIGH fire danger here now. I went running through the woods shouting for them to dump water on their fire which they did. Fortunately, the canopy didn't ignite. Unfortunately, I now have a large patch of poison oak on my arm for my efforts. For those interested, the bear cub was put down. Friday Sept 7th, the Rangers in the Orleans Ranger District are going to take all the Hosts on a field trip to the Oregon Caves National Monument and buying us all Lunch in appreciation for our services. I'll update when we get back.
