Today was a beautiful drive from Lake George to my home town of Binghamton, NY. Every time I'm in this area I am reminded of how fortunate I was to grow up in the beautiful state of New York! I think we saw some of the prettiest fall foliage of our trip today as we drove along Route 81 through the rolling hills and farm lands between the Adirondack and Catskill mountains, and past so many charming little towns.
Tonight was our first-ever Walmart overnight stop, as there are no big-rig friendly campgrounds in the immediate Binghamton area. It was a great evening for me, as I got to meet up with my friend Elaine (whom I haven't seen in almost five years), and my friend Diane (haven't seen her in about two years). I also had a special surprise, as Elaine brought with her our former boss at Public Loan Co., Jim O'Neil - from over 40 years ago! Wow! Did we ever do some reminiscing!!!
Then it was off to Sharkey's Bar for our traditional spiedie fix. For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, here is a history of the local delicacy found only in the Triple Cities area of New York (Binghamton, Johnson City and Vestal): Spiedie
. The description and history are mostly accurate, but the photo is misleading because a true Binghamton native would NEVER have spiedies on a submarine roll! It HAS to be soft, fresh ITALIAN bread!
Great night, wonderful friends, and feel-good comfort food for an old Binghamton girl! :)
