We put 188 miles on our rolling home today and the ride was smooooooooooth. I had Firestone air bags installed on the rear suspension of our truck last Thursday...what a huge improvement in ride! Hwy 101 is still somewhat rough despite a lot of summer resurfacing efforts, but the new air support made the ride very comfortable.
After far too many construction zones along the highway, we arrived at Riverwalk RV Park in Fortuna, California at about 3PM. The later arrival was also due in part to a rather late start in Port Orford this morning. We were in no particular rush to leave and traveled at a very leisurely pace. Despite the hilly terrain along the coast, the truck got just over 10MPG...not too bad for this type of roadway.
This is our first visit to Riverwalk and it looks like a pretty decent place for a stopover. It is, however, bracketed by tow very busy roads. We will most certainly keep our windows closed tonight. All interior roads are paved, the pull through spaces are fairly level (no blocks needed) and the park appears to be very clean and well maintained. For a Good Sam rate of $38 for the night, we have all the usual amenities including loads of cable TV channels and free WiFi...seems a little slow. We won't get a chance to check out the facilities so won't give a report on the restrooms or laundry rooms.
This was a beautiful day to be on the road with mostly clear skies and no wind whatsoever. A low fog mixed with bright sunshine made visibility somewhat difficult along the southern Oregon coast but cleared enough to make conditions better after crossing into California.
We will only spend one night in Fortuna and travel on south to Willits for a two night stop beginning tomorrow. A weather system heading for California shouldn't hinder our continued travels beyond Willits to Vacaville, Bakersfield and Needles before crossing into Arizona on the 17th. We are looking forward to seeing family in the SF Bay Area and travel friends during our short visit to Bakersfield.
We both feel just fine and will tell you more about our trip south tomorrow evening.
