Today was the best day of the trip. We took a small bus to Tayrona Park and to Crystal Beach inside the park. First a 1 hour bus ride then a 15 minute boat ride. The boats were like those fishermen use but the ride was through a small bay with very calm water. Our fee for this that included the park fee was $75mil pesos, or about $24US.
The water was as beautiful as any in St. Croix, crystal clear so that you could see your toes. I snorkeled near shore and saw plenty of fish. When we first arrived there was an assortment of small fish at the lean-to shack/restaurant for us to choose from that was later pan fried for our lunch with coconut rice and fried tostonies. Can't get any fresher then that.
For $30mil or about $10US pesos we were able to rent two chairs under an awning. We were hot, sweaty, and sandy on the way home and enjoyed a dip in the hotel pool.
Our last night in Santa Marta and we spent it visiting a small Tapas Bar across the street from the beach with plenty of night life people watching to entertain us.
Tomorrow we have arranged a late check out and then a trip to the airport for the return flight to Medellin where I'll spend a few nights with Mary in San Antonio.
In my search for better beaches then the ones in St. Croix, it is still on-going. Crystal Beach is a pretty and pristine clear water with fish and as nice as any in St. Croix. But a lot of work and cost to get to it. In St. Croix the water is pristine clear, plenty of fish for snorkeling near shore and you can drive up close and no charges. St. Croix still the best!
