We had quite a long drive today, about 300 miles. Most of the drive was through the Mojave Desert area, we saw a lot of sagebrush and desert plants. We stopped for gas at Whiskey Pete's, our last stop in Nevada before crossing the California line. We also had to stop for an agriculture check, we tossed out the last two tomatoes we had that were from Mexico, we passed through without an inspection. You have to be very careful with these agricultural checkpoints, if you forget a fruit or vegetable, you can be fined a huge price. This happened to us coming back into the US from Canada once, we told them about everything we knew we had and had forgotten about a bag of avocados, they didn't charge us, they gave us the warning to be more careful and they also took our avocados. :-) It has made me really careful about agricultural checkpoints from then on.
While driving through the desert we saw a lot of airplanes parked in the desert together in Mojave, California. This is a graveyard of old airplanes. I took the picture while moving, but you can at least see there was a lot of them. We also saw a lot of windmills on the drive, we have never seen so many in one place. Once we arrived in Tehachapi, everything started to turn green and beautiful. We passed through some huge mountains before arriving at The River Run campground in Bakersfield. We are parked right on the Kern River, it is a beautiful campground loaded with roses and flowers and huge sites. We will relax and enjoy the beauty for a couple of days before moving on. Check back later for more from California.
