Lake Baikal

This morning we went down to the shore of Lake Baikal for a walk. It was very brisk!!! It’s kind of a bit sad. The area is really beautiful, but because it is so cold (it is Siberia) the season only lasts for 2 months of the year. In the days of the USSR, this is where people came for their beach holiday, as they couldn’t go overseas. Now people choose to go overseas and it has become really run down, which makes it less appealing as a destination. There is a recreation zone which I think looks like a prison! I think they would be better to feature it as a wilderness destination, rather than as a resort destination. We also visited some hot springs - the algae made it unappealing to drink from, turtle rock, lion rock & a lighthouse

Back to the guesthouse for lunch, followed by some free time when most of us chose to go for a walk. In the late afternoon, they fired up the banya (sauna). I went for the full experience where we sweated in the sauna, tipped cold water over ourselves, steamed up again, slapped each other with branches of birch before going down the slide into the icy river! It was quite exhilarating, and surprisingly I didn’t feel cold when I got out
