Stork Nests

Yet Another Deserted Camp Site

Down On The Beach

Wedding Photoshoot

Day 22 - Monday 2nd October - Stegna, Poland

Moving on we headed up towards Gdansk on the North coast of Poland. Poland seems to have it's fair share of lakes & we passed quite a few. We also noticed a lot of stork nests on top of telephone & electricity poles along the roads, seems like they are left there all the time as I don't think it is the time of the year for any storks to appear.

We did have a bit of fun in the middle of Olsztyn, a rather large city, when we ran into roadworks & a diversion which threw our SatNav into confusion. She took us down some narrow streets & into a dead end where we had great fun trying to turn round & get out. A number of other cars were also having to turn back so the SatNav maps must be wrong.

We were intending to stop off at the Stutthof Concentration Camp museum, about 25 miles East of Gdansk along the coast, for a visit before staying the night in Gdansk. We got to the museum car park just after 3pm & were having a quick coffee when a security guard turned up & told us that the car park & the museum were closing & we had to leave. Apparently the opening hours had changed on the 1st of October, yesterday & the museum closes at 3pm in the winter months. A bit galling really as we then had to pay 7zlotys to get out of the car park, at least we got to use their toilets.

The decision was made then to find a camp site nearby & come back tomorrow. Easier said than done though as we wandered along the coast road. The first three camp sites we came to were closed for the winter. We did find one eventually at a hotel complex close to the sea. Once again, apart from a solitary caravan, we were the only ones on site. Everywhere along this popular coast the seaside places are closed now.

We did get a nice walk along the beach which was only a hundred yards away. Miles & miles of lovely sandy beaches stretched in either direction, deserted apart from the odd person here & there. As it happened we spotted a bride & groom having a photo shoot beside some colourful boats pulled up on the beach. It seemed somewhat coincidental that they were just married & tomorrow is our 53 rd wedding anniversary. I wonder where they will be in 53 years time?
