|Following the disappointment of not getting our flight over Milford Sound we decided to head for Te Anau and see if we could book something from there. For the first time the weather was really hideous causing floods all over the South Island. Luckily we got to Te Anau without incident although we didn't see much of the place due to the constant downpour. We ended up sitting in our small AirBnB place and booking a coach and cruise tour to Milford Sound for the next day. The weather seemed to be a bit hit and miss but it looked like a break in the clouds was due for around 1300hrs - just as we were to arrive in Milford Sound.
As it happens the weather was perfect. The coach journey included some brilliant commentary by the driver on all things including wildlife, fauna, landmarks, historic facts etc. The scenery was pretty good too. The cruise lasted a couple of hours and we had fantastic weather for the duration. Absolutely awesome place. As there had been so much rain over the previous 36 hours, the mountains were alive with cascades of water - fantastic.
Got back to Te Anau at about 1730 only to be nearly blown off of our feet by the high winds that had descended on the place. Completely different from the weather we enjoyed in Milford Sound.
Heading for Dunedin tomorrow via the most southerly point of the South Island. That will mark the farthest we have ever been away from home and also the point where we turn for home!
