The courtyard of our hotel

Betsy outside of the hotel.

This is Bob writing here. Betsy does all of our hotel bookings. She does the research and then makes the bookings. In the case of our hotel in Florence it was really a last minute addition to the itinerary. So whatever we got was ok as long as there were beds! We checked in and things looked good then we left to see the sights of Florence. We came back late and went to bed. In the morning we went to breakfast. I wondered aloud what this place might have been in a previous life. I said maybe a convent or monastery. There was something about the courtyard and wall and ceiling art that bespoke of religious orders. So back in the hotel 15 minutes before we were to leave I look it up and we hit the proverbial jackpot. The name of the place is Convitto Della Calza and it dates back to the 14th century. What makes it a real gem is that there is a fresco of The Last Supper by Franciabigio done in 1514. I hurried to the desk and they kindly took me to the room. Betsy joined me there. It was magnificent. For a few minutes we were alone in this room with this beautiful work of art. My eternal thanks to Betsy. She has managed to book some wonderful places on our trips (although the place in Wales was sketchy.) But I do not think we will ever top this. And it was her booking and my casual Internet search that gave us this truly hidden gem.
