Jeff and Cheryl New England Trip travel blog

Today started out with breakfast at the B&B. Our plan was to travel to Howe Caverns and stay near there this evening. We found a Doubletree hotel in Schenectady, about 25 miles from Howe Caverns. We arrived at the Doubletree near time for lunch. We also adjusted our plan to relax today and see the caverns tomorrow. We also planned to stay an extra night, and drive to Cooperstown (our next stop) from there, a little over an hour drive.

When we went into downtown Schenectady we first happened on an area that seemed to be in the process of being reborn. Our hotel was just one year old, and we found a good restaurant for lunch that we were told opened just two years ago. As we walked through the downtown area, we found a pedestrian mall with a mix of new and old shops, an old theater that had been reborn and was now not only hosting road companies of recent Broadway (Hamilton was going to be there in August) but had also opened a school for theater skills for children, had a theater for local productions, and a few shops.

Continuing on, we passed the city and county buildings each in the older pillared Greek style of architecture. Continuing on we happened across the Schenectady County Public Library (you had to figure this was coming). Today they just happened to be hosting the SCPL Comic Con. There were vendor booths outside and inside the library, costume contests, pictures with your choice of background and more. Cheryl and I also got a short tour and history lesson from one of the librarians. Well, we stayed away for a week and a half!

Returning to our hotel, we took advantage of the hotel's free laundry to get a new start on clothes.

Tomorrow, Howe Caverns for sure!
