Jun 20, 2019 - Innsbruck - rest day'

Rest day in Innsbruck Last night it rained, heavily I am told with some thunder and lightning but I was not aware. Most unusual!, This morning however, at 6am, a series of cannon shots or explosions rent the air followed by the church bells all going berserk. This definitely did get my attention although I had been half dozing since about 3am. We guessed that all this has something to do with the Corpus Christi holiday as it was all repeated again at 7am and then again at 8am. At first I thought that someone was doing avalanche blasting but...

Jun 19, 2019 - Mittersill to Innsbruck

Mittersill to Volders (about 15km from Innsbruck) Our hotel last night was delightful in all but two aspects. Firstly they ran out of hot water in the evening and secondly the bed was strangely uncomfortable. I actually compared it unfavourably to my sleeping mat. The room itself was lovely, the facilities were otherwise great and the meals were great. When I woke I felt better, though still tender in the tum, so I decided to risk riding and carry a toilet roll in case. After a day and a half with limited food I felt a bit lacking in energy...

Day 11 - Saturday 25 May 19 - Innsbruck It was an early rise to have breakfast and to be at the Hauptbahnhof by 0830 hrs for the shuttle bus to the Swarovski display 19 km’s from city centre. This visit was covered by the Innsbruck card as was the shuttle and started with a walk through of the “Chambers of Wonders”. The chambers comprise a series of darkened rooms with various displays of crystals, designed as art pieces specifically to impress the characteristics of crystals under light. The “Crystal Dome”, an artists presentation of what...

May 24, 2019 - Day 10 - Innsbruck

Day 10 - Friday 24 May 19 - Innsbruck After a solid nights sleep and breakfast in the hotel, we were at the Sightseeing pickup point in front of our hotel at 1000hrs for our “Hop on Hop on again “ tour. Our plan for the trip did not last long and it was not until we reached Schloss Ambras that we decided to visit. We had purchased the two day Innsbruck card which covered the cost of the HOHO and entry to the Schloss; the card was to prove a good buy. Ambras was of real interest primarily because of the paintings of the Habsburg descendants...

May 23, 2019 - Day 9 - Innsbruck from Switzerland

Day 9 - Thursday 23 May 19 - Innsbruck We awoke to a bright sunny day, packed our bags and were away by 0845 hrs for the 230km drive to Innsbruck. Initially we drove the south bank of the lake, first stopping at Kesswil for a coffee and a bun. The highlight of the drive was the old town centre of Rorschach which sits on the edge of the lake and has a number of aged buildings on the water with many others beautifully decorated. Passage through the town was narrow and slow. After a false side trip to a tourist site that was caused by my poor...

May 23, 2019 - Austrian Lakes and Innsbruck

Hello from Innsbruck, On Wednesday we had a tour of the lakes, villages and mountains of the Salzkammergut region of Austria. We had to imagine how beautiful it must be when the sun is shining because unfortunately it rained all day. Our first stop was St. Wolfgang. It is situated on the northern shore of Wolfgangsee Lake at the foot of the Schafberg Mountain. One of the popular attractions is the steepest cog railway in Austria. However, due to the weather we decided to skip the train ride. A few people went but they said it was like a...

May 30, 2018 - Innsbruck

We returned to the SEAT garage in Innsbruck but they said they could not do anything about the car until at the earliest the following week. We then rang the small garage in Seefeld we had first visited and they said they could have a look on Friday morning. As we were in Innsbruck we decided to re-visit. The last time we had been visited Innsbruck was in 2003. We enjoyed exploring this lovely city once again. The famous landmarks are the Golden roof, the Olympic Ski jump plus the lovely old town.

May 23, 2018 - In the mountains behind Innsbruck

We woke up to a beautiful day so we decided to head up the Hungerburg just behind Innsbruck. We headed up to the top station Hafelekar at 2,256m. As well as views of the Inn Valley the views of the mountains inland were outstanding. There was still significant snow at this level so there were limited walking opportunities. We headed down to the middle station Seegrube at 1905m and sat and ate our lunch watching a microlite flyer prepare and the take off. We the walked the Path of Perspectives although Tony found it a bit difficult as he...

Sep 16, 2017 - Innsbruck

Our first destination in Austria was the city of Innsbruck. In truth we picked here as it was the easiest place to get to from Fussen and only had half a day to have a look around. Innsbruck has very much an alpine feel to it with many skills resorts dotted around Tyrol and alpine views from just about anywhere is the city itself. We had planned to go up a cable car to one of the mountains 2,300m above the city but as luck would have it the rains and low clouds came over when we arrived to scuppered our plans. With little else to do we had...

Sep 16, 2017 - Innsbruck

Yesterday we drove to Lake Como....an upside down Y-shaped lake surrounded by houses with a town-Como-at one end. The setting is spectacular. From here we went to Switzerland driving along Lake Lugano and up the autoroute through equally spectacular scenery...jagged mountains, narrow canyons, magnificent waterfalls cascading from high up. The most amazing, I think, was San Bernadino where the pass was close to 3000 m. or more. From the lookout the snowshed that became a long tunnel was just up around the corner. We descended through a...

May 20, 2017 - From Lyon on May 20

9. May 20, 2017. Day 26. Yesterday 5/19 we rode up and down the Corniche in Cannes. Just beautiful. The Cannes Film Festival is on from May 17 to May 28 – we didn’t get to see any films but the beautiful people were in town -- we didn't even know the Film Festival was in town. But we know some of the movies--with Collin Farrell and one by Sofia Coppola--The Beguiled and The Killing of the Sacred Deer--by Yorgos Lanthimos and the Korean "Okja". The harbour was full of luxury yachts and the biggest cruise ship I have ever seen—The Epic—was...
