Jun 10, 2017 - Bike Barge ride - Gent, Belgium

Saturday Our last morning in Brugge was very busy, with lots of walking, we found the Post Office, & markets which were on the other side of the old city. Around midday we found our barge boat the "Anna Antal" she was originally built in 1897, the old Hull still remains. The vessel has had many lives, as a barge, sea vessel fishing boat and many engine exchanges since, originally powered by steam, and later by diesel motors. She is about 38m long. It was converted back in 1995 to a passenger vessel & refitted in 2012, it now accommodates 22...

May 26, 2014 - Bruges to Gent

May 26 Our first full day of riding would be this misty Monday morning. I was the first one up on a dewy deck for coffee. We began what would be our morning routine of breakfast and making up our lunches of sandwiches, treats and fruit to take with us on the ride. Our 9:00 a.m. launch got off without a hitch and we were off and riding, enjoying the high tech bikes and the relative comfort we had hoped for. This day’s ride would be from Bruges to Gent (Ghent), some 50 km of fairly easy riding along the towpaths of the canal. We were a bit...

Jun 4, 2011 - Gent to Bruges

After a warm evening in Gent we started out on board Elodie for the first hour of the day then launched off on our bikes after fixing yet another flat tire. The ride again took us through nice countryside with roads or paths lined with planed trees for windbreaks. Along the way we passed a marker almost hidden on the side of the road which was the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. We stopped at a local bar beside the canal that used to have a small boat to ferry patrons and local workers across the canal. We sat outside and had a...

Apr 17, 2008 - Belgium. Antwerp, Day trip to Ghent

Took our 1st class train to Antwerp, (as I was told I was too old to buy 2nd class). So we are fancy backpackers and sit with the businessmen who talk loud on their blackberries and older couples who ignore each other as much as possible. Its great, we always get a seat and I get too walk past the heathens in the 2nd class who are way too aggressive for a window seat. I'm fancy anyhow, there is no denying it. The train is a fast train and we arrive in Antwerp after only an hour and a bit. A guy who Mich "accidentally" spoke Dutch too when...
