Nov 14, 2018 - Iguassu Brazil

November 13, 2018 Iguassu, Brazil We had a relaxing morning on Tuesday, since Mauricio picked us up at 11 AM. We headed back to the border, and crossed from Argentina back to Brazil, where we will stay for two nights. Our first stop was at the shopping center we had eaten at a few days ago, just to walk around a bit and get some photos. From there we headed to Iguassu National Park, where there is an entrance fee, which was included in the original price for our trip. We had lunch at a restaurant that has a view of the falls. Then we went...

Nov 12, 2018 - Iguazu Falls, Argentina

Iguazu, Argentina; Lois' turn to write: We spent all day Sunday with our guide Mauricio, touring Iguazu National Park in Argentina. We didn't miss anything! Mauricio lives on the Brazilian side of the Iguazu River, and works for a local tour company there. All the guides on either side are given free rein to assist clients in both Brazil and Argentina. He studied for two years to become certified as a licensed guide, has very good English skills, and can also speak Spanish fluently. We are quite happy with him, and yesterday he carried both...

Nov 10, 2018 - Pantanal to Argentina

Lois and I were tired of being bit up walking in the forest, so we only went on two driving safaris on our last day. We went on a night time drive where the guide used a spotlight to look for game. We saw an anteater retreat into the brush, and then a tapir. Getting a photo of an animal in the dark is really tough because he has to stand still while you shine a light on him. Seeing animals in the Pantanal is not like seeing animals on an African safari. First, the animal density is a lot less than in Africa. Second, getting around in a...

Oct 18, 2018 - Iguazu from the Brazilian side

Today it is bucketing down, and I really mean it. The rain is very heavy and from our room window there is water cascading from gutters and downpipes. We go to breakfast at 9am as we knew the weather was not going to be good today. 100% chance of rain up till lunchtime. We are sharing a taxi to the Brazilian side of Iguazu falls with Sarah and after some discussion we decide to meet in the foyer at 11am to review the situation. At 11am the 3 of us meet and think we should wait another hour, so at 12 noon we meet again and get a taxi to the...

Jul 29, 2018 - Days 9 & 10

Here we are in Rio, checked into our hotel, got upgraded and we now have views over Copacabana beach, what a great sight. Ventured out on a Our own looking for a money change, while looking stopped and had dinner, everyone loves pizza so that is what we had, gave up on the money exchange so headed home, got lost, in the end just headed for the beach and worked from there. New day with a full day tour. Vincent our tour guide was the best, up early for Christ the Redeemer, he said to beat the Chinese, then to Sugarloaf, great views of Rio...

Jul 18, 2018 - Day 6, 7 & 8

Well what can I say about the falls, absolutely fabulous. We arrived at Iguazu and was met by Marta, our guide for the day. She took us to the Brazilian side of the falls. From this side the views were amazing, she showed us great places to get some great shots, along the way we also caught glimpse of wide life. Back to the hotel, buffet dinner then bed. Our days are so full. Next day up bright and early new guide, Julie, and off to the Argentinian side of the falls. Long walks on platforms above the falls, we reached the Devils throat where...

Nov 11, 2017 - Igauzu falls

Always difficult to describe the onslaught on your senses that is the raw power of the Igauzu falls. You hear them from a km out, they beckon you in, and you follow. The scent strengthens like a highveld storm approaching. Your nostrils flare and drink.... Never quite prepares you for the sight though. First a half dozen tributaries succumb to the 80m descent into the gorge below, but the Garganta de Diablo (devils throat) is awe inspiring as two of natures elements clash when bedrock forces the river through a tight cauldron. The torrent...

Feb 2, 2016 - 31st - 2nd February

31st January Ok, so went to check out after breakfast; we owe for 2 bottles of water. Guy goes to pay and the cheeky *** charged for the rental of the beach chairs and umbrella! Good job we didn't tell him the umbrella was broken when we tried to use it; he'd have charged us for a new one. Guys that cross that we have to go immediately to the bus stop and wait for the bus.......50 mins later in the scorching heat the bus turns up. Get to the ferry terminal and pay. 35 reals each so that ok, about £14 including island tax. The ferryman...

Jan 31, 2016 - 31 January - off to Ilha do Mel, Honey Island

Ok, we had a small pizza last night, not what we'd planned. We'd wanted prawns in a sauce with rice which we'd had a few days ago with our fish dinner but we couldn't make anyone understand that WE ONLY WANTED THE PRAWNS IN SAUCE. Got ip and wet to the pizzeria again where we had another marguerita which was very nice. Walking back to our hotel, we notice the searchlights out again and the electric cables across the road.....not another concert? Anyway, get in, finish the packing as much as we can, have a drink etc and go to bed around...

Jan 30, 2016 - 28th - 30th January

28th January Rain again! Wasn't raining in the morning initially so walked into town along the river bank at the back of our 'hotel'. Interesting to see how other people live. There were lots of different birds, not sure what they were but we did see a kingfisher although they're yellow here. Saw a lot of crabs too. Some tiny ones with one big arm and claw and others that were red. There's some lovely properties along the far side. Some were being built and we were allowed to be nosey and have a look inside one of them. Very nice, but...

Jan 27, 2016 - 26 th & 27th January

26th January Caught bus to check the ferry out. We waited for around half an hour for it to arrive. We weren't sure of the time it'd get to our stop although we do know what time it leaves the station. Got on, paid and went to the end where we had to get off and wait for another bus to take us to the ferry. Arrived, checked it out and found that there's 2 ferries depending on where you want to go in the island so it's a good job we sorted that out. It's $R35 each - £7 so ok. Bus journey took about an hour so ages! Got the bus (2 buses)...

Jan 25, 2016 - 24th - 25th January

24th January Today's the day for a special lunch. We go to the beach for a couple of hours. We have 3 days we have to find somewhere to stay before going back to Rio. We're not staying here! There's a 'concert hall' or something like that and a bar at the end of the street. First night there's a gig. Must have been a big band or something because they had their own big bus. The bar opens at around 8pm and closes at 5am! It's so loud and although you get to sleep because you're tired, I've been waking at 2am and not being able to get back to...
