Oct 22, 2018 - Boat trip around Ilha Grande

Today we have a speed boat trip around one side of Ilha Grande. We have breakfast and then head out to the supermarket to buy some drinks to take on the boat. At 10.15 we wander down to the shore and get on a speedboat that holds 12 of us. It has a little canopy so we have some shade. We zoom off back the way we came from on the ferry. It is a beautiful day, sun is shining and the water varies from a turquoise colour to a deep blue. We travel for nearly 45 mintues to get to Lagoa Azul. It is just beautiful. The skipper anchors the boat and...

Feb 17, 2013 - Ilha Grande

Two and a half hours south west of Rio de Janeiro is an island getaway called Ilha Grande, a popular destination for travellers looking for some R and R after Carnival and the setting for this next blog entry. After a week of long days in the sun and late nights dancing in the streets we were more than ready for a few days relaxing on the beaches. It was only four days but here’s what we got up to. We booked a transfer from our hostel in Rio to the island including the boat ride over. The mini bus that picked us up was small and hot but...

Mar 1, 2012 - Ilha Grande

Thursday 23rd February 2012 This morning was a bit of a run around packing everything up and getting snacks for the journey which has turned into crisps and water. Today was also the first signs of my mosquito bite allergic reaction on my face. A few red dots noticed on my chin but thought nothing of it. We got the bus at 11.00 and another opportunity to start talking to some of the group members. A couple of hours journey to the ferry station and an hour wait in the heat was quite intense but we just about managed it. The Ferry ride was...

Jan 7, 2012 - Ilha Grande

Jan 7 to 9 Ilha Grande After enjoying the beaches and warm weather in Rio we went to the beautiful island of Ilha Grande. We arrived by bus and found an information centre to find out where the ferry was to take us to the island. The lady jumped up from behind her desk and said the last ferry of the day was leaving in 10 minutes and it would take us 5 minutes to get there. She quickly rushed us outside and into a cab. We just made it, caught the ferry and made it to Ilha Grande in the evening. Around Ilha Grande there are many smaller...

Ilha Grande aka Big Island. Welcome to the world of no cash machines, cars or towns! We were promised beautiful beaches but the weather did not play ball and we were to the beaches in the rain instead! Lovely sleepy little place though, with dogs that follow you around all day for company. Also a wonderful little hostel painted all in pink with sow white gnomes in the garden and humingbirds everywhere. Weather cheered up for our boat trip home, a smaller boat because the normal one was broken, beautiful. xx

Sep 23, 2010 - Ilha Grande

Beautiful beaches, breathtaking hikes, and the most refreshing water in the world. STepping off the ferry and following lonely planet´s trusty directions, Andy and I trekked across the beach to the left of the port until we reached a dead end and Aquario, our hostel of choice. RIGHT on the water, and decent dorm rooms, we had arrived in paradise, far too overexcited about escaping the rain in Paraty. We were straight away joined by two lovely girls from Melbourne in our room, Fran and Cath, who would be our island companions for the next...

Sep 18, 2010 - The Big Island

I was going to wait to do the update on this last week or so on Ilha Grande, but since it is raining, misty and cold on an island where you can only get anywhere by walking or by boat, and by anywhere I mean another beach, it seemed like a good opportunity. Photos uploaded as well despite the perils of computer electrifying the whole outside of my camera. So we arrived on Ilha Grande last Monday, 2 hour bumpy bus ride from Paraty to Angra dos Reis, then an hour and a half on the boat. The island was obviously named for a reason, as it...

Jun 18, 2010 - joker

Feb 7, 2010 - Ilha Grande

So we have now moved on from Paraty to Ilha Grande...Paraty was one of the most BEAUTIFUL old towns I have ever layed eyes on, set in the middle of the mountains with cobbled streets and clear blue seas surrounding it. On the first day we went on a boat trip, which was SO lovely and relaxing - there was live music playing from a guitar downstairs, as we would stop at a selection of beaches throughout the day to have a swim and cool off/snorkel. The next day we took an hourish bus to Trindade, where we went to an organic swimming pool, and...

Apr 20, 2009 - Ilhla Grande, chill day

Our planned boat ride with BBQ and snorkeling did not work out as too many people canceled. We were only a little disappointed as we were pretty tired as well. We treked to a beach Mimi, the other guide, had recommended, it was crowded, not much beach, so we treked back to town to go to the other beaches. My feet were sun burnt, sand got between my flip flop straps and skin and hurt pretty good. We found Derek, Isabelle, Mary, Paul, and Ri and hung out with them for the day on a shady beach. Heading back Paul suggested stopping for a beer,...
