Nov 15, 2019 - Rio

One of our lecturers made a commentary on our sail in to the Rio de Janeiro harbor. The two iconic sites are the Christ the Redeemer statue and Sugarloaf Mountain. We all piled out on the deck to take a look. Later that evening we had a samba show on board; quite energetic and entertaining. During our one day on shore Roger and I did a highlights of Rio tour. We left before 8 and were out all day. The weather was a bit overcast, and we did have a bit of rain at Sugarloaf, but we were still able to see the views from both locations. Our...

Nov 5, 2018 - Going to Ipanema

John writing Today we had free day on our own, so we slept in a bit, and then went down for breakfast. Because we had the problem with water dripping from our ceiling yesterday, the hotel gave us two certificates for free 30 minute massages. I jumped right on the chance and set up an appointment for 10 AM. It was very nice with scented oils, hot towels, and soothing music. Later in the day the management also sent up a bowl of fresh fruit, and Lois had her massage at 3 PM. She relaxed enough that she dozed off. After my massage, we planned...

Nov 4, 2018 - Third day in Rio

Lois writing today We had a restful night, and woke to a semi-cloudy day, with temps in the 70s, and a good breeze most of the time. Eugenio picked us up at 9 AM, and asked if we would mind adding an extra item onto our schedule for the day. Sure! He knew that we had requested to visit a school, but with the holidays, that couldn't be arranged. But he realized that we like talking to locals wherever we travel, so he took us to his own home to meet his family! Everyone was home since it was Sunday morning. We asked about church attendance in...

Nov 3, 2018 - A very full day 2 in Rio

Today we hit the major tourist sites in Rio. It was also the first sunny day in Rio in the past five days, and it was a Saturday, so everything was a bit crowded. However, having a guide (Eugenio) who books the 9 AM tram up to Christ the Redeemer a month in advance means no standing in line. Rio is situated in one of the most beautiful settings you can imagine. There is a huge bay dotted with islands and small mountains that back up to the coast. The climate is such that any seed that falls grows like crazy, so there is greenery everywhere....

Nov 2, 2018 - First Day in Rio

On November 1, we flew from Traverse City to Chicago, and then on to Miami. The only glitch occurred about two miles from our house, when John realized that he had left his passport and money on the dresser at home. Not a problem – Marcy & John had picked us up early enough so that we still arrived at the airport with plenty of time to spare. The first flight was a bit late, and there was no issue catching the next one at O'Hare. Naturally, the walk was long, but walking in airports was our only exercise that day. In Miami, we had a six...

Oct 28, 2018 - Heading south!

John & Lois are traveling to Brazil! We are flying out of Traverse City on November 1, with stops in Chicago and Miami, and plan to return on November 24. Our itinerary includes Rio de Janeiro, the Pantanal (Cuiaba is the nearest town), Iguazu Falls (from both the Brazilian and the Argentinian sides) and finally Manaus. From there we'll embark on a six night cruise on the Rio Negro and Amazon. We arranged the trip through a travel company called Vaya Adventures. They organized our Peru/Ecuador trip five years ago, and we were happy with the...

Oct 25, 2018 - Rio and really bad weather

Today the weather is worse than yesterday. No chance of getting to see Christ the Redeemer today. The suggested tour has been called off. Rio has so many outdoor activities it is not a city to be in if the weather is bad. Its warm, about 25C but so grey and gloomy, we dont feel like going anywhere. In fact, there is nothing more to see. If the weather had been good we would have spent some time at the beach and definitely gone to see Christ the Redeemer but it is not to be. We are not enjoying Rio at all, and this is partly to do with the...

Oct 24, 2018 - Favella, City tour and sugarloaf mountain

High hopes for today but the weather is not good. Still 25C but very overcast, low cloud and some spots of rain. At 9am we have a favella tour. We go to the district of Saint Theresa where the yellow tolley cars ferry reisdents around. We are met by two guides who live in the favella and will show us around. We are taken to a hostel where we get a view of the city. Million dollar views from a very poor area. Then we are taken to another hostel for the same view. We are just wandering around the narrow walkways, we don't see many other...

Oct 23, 2018 - Ilha Grande to Rio de Janiero

Today at 9.30 we lwave the Hotel to catch the ferry back to the maninland. The ferry is and hour and a half and the sun is shining and the water calm so it is a pleasant ride. The bus waits for us and we then travel along the coast toward Rio de Janiero. Through the thick forest we can somteimes catch glimpses of bays and sandy beaches or harbours with boats moored. It is really a pretty drive. We stop at a roadside restaurant for 30 minutes to grab some empanandas or similar and then back on the road. As we get closer to Rio we of course...

Jan 14, 2018 - A day in Rio

Watched the sunrise from my room, then off to the metro station to go the meeting place for the van to the top of Corcovado mountain where the statue of Christ the Redeemer is at. Corcovado is 710 meters and the statue is another 38 meters to the top, and this is one of the seven wonders of the world. The statue was started in 1926 and completed in 1931 made of soapstone and reinforced concrete, covered by tiles, there are 220 steps to the top (and now there a escalators which I used LOL) it is 2326 ft above sea level standing at 98 ft, the...
