Mar 15, 2014 - All About The Food

We went to a traditional Brazilian restaurant last night for dinner. Typically the people eat their late meal around 8:00 pm. Noticeably the entire wait staff were older men. A very quaint little place that became rather busy on a Friday evening. Toddlers were dressed in PJ's and fell asleep in the parents' arms. We shared an appetizer of bread; tart, pitted olives; soft cheeses and sun-dried tomatoes in oil. It was very good and went done easily. As the Atlantic is only metres from the door, we tried the sole as well. It was served with a...

Mar 14, 2014 - Corcovado Mountain: Christ The Redeemer Monument

Took a bus tour to the site and then the tram to the top. The monument of Christ itself is 30 metres high excluding the base. The sun was brilliant and made taking pictures difficult; but well with the afternoon. Must say the tour guide was somewhat hard to understand; so can't really share any specific details that you couldn't find online. Glorious day in the hot, hot sun with my family:) Good night from Rio. Tchau (good-bye). Michelle

Mar 14, 2014 - Corcovado

This is from this early this afternoon. We walked to Copacabana Beach from our hotel and sat under an umbrella watching the diverse people walking and running and site-seeing and working. The sand was so hot I couldn't walk on it!! Walked back slowly stopping lots to see the vendors on the streets selling their wares.

Mar 4, 2014 - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - part 2

Saturday 1st March 2014 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Our second full day in Rio today and we had quite a late breakfast and then decided that we would go to visit Christ the Redeemer. We walked down to the metro station only to find that this particular station had been closed for the Carnival period so we walked to the next station and caught the train just two stops from the nearest metro to Christos, found the mini buses that take tourists up to the statue which is actually inside a national park. The mini buses were very well organised and we...

Feb 28, 2014 - Paraty to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Thursday 27th February 2014 Paraty to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Up at about 5:45am to pack up for the drive to Rio today. Sad to be leaving beautiful Paraty (pronounced Parachee) There were four trucks going to Rio from our campsite and we were the first to leave at 7:00am, having packed up and had breakfast by then. Today was very hot – by the time we reached the outskirts of Rio, it was 41°C. Once we arrived at our hotel in the centre of the city, in order to prevent anything being stolen and to offload all the bags quickly, we used a system...

Feb 16, 2014 - Rio de Janeiro

Friday 14 February Day 43 Rio de Janeiro As planned we were up at six and it was a glorious sunrise and even though we weren't docking until nine, there was land visible on three sides so we were already in the main bay. We got dressed and went up to Deck 12, the best vantage point to watch our coming into the port. It was really picturesque and you could see the famous statue on the mountain in the distance. From our balcony we discovered that we could get free port side Internet. It was a little faster than the ship so I decided to try to...

Feb 13, 2014 - Argentina and Uruguay

Friday 7 February Day 36 Puerto Madryn, Argentina We had booked an excursion today but it is always difficult to get accurate information as to the amount of walking, number of steps and the type of bus we 're going to travel in. The excursions are graded as 1, 2 or 3 level but if often has no real correlation to the real difficulty for me. So some of the excursions are great and others have knocked us both out. Puerto Madryn is only a small port and the cruise ship berth is new and within walking distance to the town. The tour buses were...

Jan 14, 2014 - Rio de Janeiro 3: Cristo, Parks & Gardens

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Cristo, Parque Large and the Rio Botanic Gardens ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ January 2014 Rio de Janeiro Parque Large Reached via metro and the metro bus which drops you right outside - although don't rely on the driver to tell you we have arrived even though a very helpful English-speaking passenger had asked him to do just that. PL was originally a sugar mill in colonial times. In the mid-19th century a British...

Jan 13, 2014 - Rio de Janeiro 2: Football and Favela Rocinha

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Football and Favela ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ January 2014 The Stadio Mario Filho (at Maracana) I went on a guided tour of the stadium known commonly known as the Maracana, although its official name is Stadio Mario Filho, named after a Brazilian journalist who was a major supporter of the plan to build the stadium. Getting the tour was not quite as straightforward as I has hoped. I trekked all the way out there...

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: The Centre, Pao de Acucar and the Beaches ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ January 2014 Rio de Janeiro Time does not permit more prose except to say during my whole time in Rio it was @#*$ hot. The picture captions pretty well cover most of it anyway.

Jan 10, 2014 - Our last stop - Rio

We were met at the airport by our guide and transferred to our hotel, the Marina All Suites, right across the road from the beach – we have the view of the beach one side of the window and the Christ statue on the other side, pretty good. It is high season in Rio right now, so our guide suggesting getting up early to start our tour (the kids are gagging for a bit of a kip-in). High season also means that all of the resaurants are quite full, but we managed to find a little Italian that went down a treat. 6.30 wake-up to leave the hotel at...
