May 19, 2019 - Two very different modes of transport

A full day in Banff to do whatever we liked! And, boy, did I do a lot of great things! After breakfast, shower etc etc... I set out for a walk while Cheryl went back to bed for a while. (These tours get very tiring - early morning starts, full days, late-ish nights and sleeping in unfamiliar beds). When I left, the shops were still shut and there weren’t many people about. I walked through the village of Banff down to the Bow River where a team of horses were being lead on a pathway to near the Fairmont Hotel to start their day of being...

May 18, 2019 - Snow, frozen lakes and Mounties!

Woke this morning, at about 6.30, to glorious snow... lovely, delicate flakes falling down and dusting the trees. As we waited to leave at 9.30, it became heavier. Breakfast was scrumptious- so many choices and so fresh! I had some fresh fruit (blueberries, blackberries and strawberries), cranberry juice and then a freshly cooked omelette. Cheryl and I then went out for a refreshing (read cold) walk in the snow. There was no wind so, while cold, it wasn’t too bad at all. We walked around for about half an hour before coming back inside to...

Sep 8, 2018 - Lake Minnewanka

The day started out raining, and no view of any mountains. We decided to press on, and let the day unfold how it would. Soon the cloud cleared, and we were lucky to have another great viewing day. Despite its name and the Aussie jokes I can imagine, Lake Minnewanka was a peaceful, pretty spot. Much quieter than the others we have been to. Bit to nervous to walk too far. On the roadback to Banff, an elk was eating leaves just at the side of the road, so relaxed and comfortable. We have been so blessed to see such amazing wildlife. Went into...

Sep 7, 2018 - Moraine Lake

Left around 6.30am, as yesterday as the Moraine Lake car park was open at 7.30 when we arrived for Lake Louise. Arrived to a full car park sign! At 7.30am! There were a few cars waiting so we stopped in line. We were told by an Aussie attendant they the car park was full at 6.30! Oh no, then we saw about 4 cars exiting, so we asked him if we could go in? He thought they were just turned around at the car park, but since we were Aussies, we could go through. We couldn't believe it. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi! Off we went for about...

Sep 6, 2018 - Lake Louise and Banff

We got up super early, -1C, and drove nearly an hour, through amazing scenery at sunrise to Lake Louise. We arrived at 7.20am, got a parking spot in the nearly empty carpark. We were blown away by the beauty of the view, and it's reflection in the glass smooth water. Not many visitors yet, so very tranquil, we were able to soak in the majestic mountains, the glacier mineral green of Lake Louise, its magnificence in the reflection and of course the Fairmont Hotel. We walked along the lake, so peaceful and took many amazing photographs! We...

Aug 24, 2018 - Banff

On Friday, we did the short drive to move to the Banff campground. We did the tunnel mountain loop trail around the campgrounds. Then soaked in the Banff hot springs. Ahhh! We walked around the town a bit and then had our best meals of the trip at a vegetarian restaurant called Nourish Bistro. Totally yummy!! Good music playing as well.

Jul 26, 2018 - on the way to Banff

I traveled through the badlands of Saskatchewan and Alberta then started seeing farms again, west of Medicine Hat. And there was a mandatory road stop at a weigh station for aquatic vehicles! A first for me, but great idea! Alberta and British Columbia don't have the problem with quag mussels and plants yet and the government has a way of enforcing these checks. If I didn't stop, it could have cost me $350 in fines! I now have a piece of paper saying I am allowed to kayak in Alberta. Calgary is a big city and Route 1 goes right through it,...

Jul 18, 2018 - Banff

Had my best nights sleep so far, that is until the alarm went off at 6am, conveniently left set by the previous occupants of our room - cheers for that! Especially as no need for an early start today. As I briefly mentioned, Jen & I really like the look of Banff. It resembles what we would expect of an alpine retreat resort, with many wooden & log type buildings. Not that surprising really given this is a town surrounded by glaziers and mountains with an altitude of nearly 1,400 metres. First job of the day is to get some breakfast (no more...

Jul 17, 2018 - Rocky Mountaineer - Day 2

Good nights sleep but wake at 4.15 - obviously don’t trust our alarms to do the job! Forgot to say but our room was again opposite the lifts, had rather noisy plumming (especially a couple of rooms down), it sounded like a wall was about to fall down when the a/c kicked in and immediately outside our window was housed one of the hotels a/c ‘boxes’. Anyway we set off the the second & last day on the RM train. We were told the scenery would be more stunning than yesterday’s which turned out to be so true. We certainly knew what to expect...

Jul 12, 2018 - Banff--the last day

Peter and Elisabeth got up early and the two of them went up to Lake Louise. Elisabeth had not seen it and so they left the campground about 6 am so they could beat the crowds. They were able to get a parking place and they had breakfast at the Cafe in the Hotel and got to see the area. They were back at the campground by 11 am. The boys wanted to go to town and pick up some stuff and so we all went to town and had ice cream and walked around. We came back to the campground and Pete and Elisabeth took the car back and had dinner (just the...

Jul 11, 2018 - Banff- day 4

Should not have said anything about the weather.Today we woke up and it was cloudy and rainy! Pete and Elisabeth decided to take the boys to a local cave to explore. They enjoyed all though they said it was not much of a cave, but they had some VR with a Minecraft theme which they really enjoyed. We actually met them downtown and after lunch, Peter and the boys went to an indoor water park and Susan and Elisabeth stayed downtown and shopped. I volunteered to go back and walk the dogs (and take a nap)! The rain had let up so everyone had a...

Jul 10, 2018 - Banff - day 3

Today Pete and Elisabeth and the boys hit the road for the Columbia Ice field and the town of Jasper. They are planning on getting to walk on a Glacier enjoy the scenery along the Ice Field Parkway. Susan and I are going to take the bus to town and do some shopping and eat lunch at a place we had eaten when we were here before. We also wanted to do some shopping and just wander around Banff. It is an easy town to walk and there is lots to see and do. We also wanted to go by the grocery store and pick up a couple of things. It is always...
