Dec 27, 2017 - Calgary & Home

Woke this morning in Calgary still trying to defrost from last night’s bone chilling walk from the restaurant (this morning’s temp -2). Decided it was too cold to do any thing outside so leisurely got organized, had breakfast in the hotel, read a little and had the last of the brandy in some hot tea! Having a 1:00pm checkout we wandered down to check out and wait for our ride to the airport. Arriving quite early to the airport, there were no lines! So we completed the checkin process with luggage tags attached and attempted to put the...

Dec 26, 2017 - Travel Day

Travel Day Woke to our last morning view of Cascade Mt! Beautiful. A leisure morning as our departure was in the afternoon. Then...travel confusion with the bus transfer to Calgary. The short version is that all worked out. Our return ride to the city was scenic. Great to see the surrounding areas in daylight as our initial ride to Banff was in the dark. Our plans to explore Calgary evaporated with the reality of winter. The minus 13 degrees felt like minus 29 aka weather channel! The receptionist told us about a great Italian restaurant...

Dec 25, 2017 - Christmas in Banff

Christmas Day - Today was a lazy morning as the bus did not depart until 10:15 for the Banff Springs Hotel. The temperature was a rather chilly -8 but crystal clear and no wind. Andrea, our tour leader, suggested we could leave our coats on the bus as we were going into the hotel for high tea and would not need them. Only when we got into the hotel did we discover she had kept hers on! It was a rather brisk walk from the bus to the hotel entrance! The Banff Springs Hotel was built in the 19th century by the Canadian Railroad and opened for...

Dec 24, 2017 - Christmas Eve Day

Awoke to another sunny and cold day with a view out the window that inspires! Boarded the bus which took us to the Banff Museum for a guided tour lead by another informative and passionate employee of Parks Canada. Think ‘stuffed animals.’ OK...taxidermy! An amazing building that houses a collection of ‘stuffed animals’ that was exhibited at the 1914 Chicago World Fair. It was the most popular exhibition of the fair according to our guide. Boarded the bus quickly due to really chilly temps for a ride up the switch-backed mountain road to a...

Dec 23, 2017 - Banff Tour

Buffet breakfast this morning and it was just beginning to get light outside with the hotel lights on he snow covered trees! So quickly finishing breakfast grabbing camera, coat, hat and gloves we headed outside (it was cold!). The view of Cascade Mountain out the window of our room is always different and spectacular. Going out the spa doors to the outdoor patio is definitely a winter wonderland and the outdoor pool/patio is now a skating rink! Plan for the day is a morning tour of the Banff area by Andrea and our bus driver Fabian, then...

Dec 22, 2017 - An Adventurous Day

Friday’s Adventures began with the doorman snapping early morning pictures in the morning darkness with the festive lights twinkling! After breakfast Judi and I boarded a bus that took us to learn about the first hot mineral springs of Canada...Cave and Basin. We listened to a highly entertaining and informative lecture and video presentation by two very energetic and passionate lecturers. That discovery eventually led to the establishment of Banff National Park. After viewing the hot spring and area around it, we boarded the bus to have...

Dec 21, 2017 - First Day in Banff

December 21 - Great sleep-in morning. Opening the drapes and with a cup of coffee we enjoyed the view from our 3rd floor room. This hotel is unique in that the lobby (which is street level on the 7th floor) is above our 3rd floor room, so to get to our room we go down from the lobby. The city of Banff has codes that does not allow more than three stories above street grade so the hotel went down, not up, for six levels for their nine story hotel! The views are exquisite of the recent snow (yesterday), the snow covered trees and distant...

May 30, 2017 - Now in beautiful Banff after two nights at Emerald Lake

Another lovely day in paradise. On leaving Jasper we had a short drive to Maligne Canyon. After a walk along the river, it then dropped about 50 mts to the canyon floor. Our guide also showed us horns and antlers from different animals. We travelled along the Icefields Parkway, by the time we reached the IceExplorer we had spotted 2 Black Bears some Deer, Big Horn Sheep, and a young Grissly Bear that was walking along the edge of the road beside us. Just fantastic . The Ice-explorer allowed us it go on the Athabasca glacier in the vehicle,...

Jun 11, 2016 - Snowing in June and a Mountain top view

Calgary is absolutely amazing already, but the coolest thing about today is going to be our trip out to the beautiful city of Banff. Our wonderful trip to Calgary today was accompanied by an amazing tour guide who was very sharp on his knowledge of Calgary’s fame. According to his commentary, Calgary has maintained a tradition of excellence. As we passed a ski slope that had been abandoned by the Olympic committee, he informed us of the 1988 winter Olympics. The ski slope looked extremely steep and dangerous, but I cannot say I would not...

Jun 4, 2016 - Day at Lake Louise, Alberta

Hey y'all!! Spent the day yesterday in BEAUTIFUL Lake Louise!!! About an hour from Banff. We took a scenic byway called the Bow Trail highway to get there. If you saw my Facebook entry yesterday, you know what we saw! Yep, my first Bear in the wild!!! John's eagle eye once again spotted him on the right side of the road coming out of the woods. We stopped off on the right side and watched. Well he proceeded to cross the road and come up right beside the car to eat grass!!! As if he knew I wanted a photo op!! I had the window down...

Sep 19, 2015 - Banff

We are on the road again and finally have some good Wi-Fi. We are on our way to Montana and Glacier NP. Should be there tomorrow--Sunday. But let me digress to Banff and Lake Louise. Banff and Lake Louise are truly beautiful--and we did a lot. And we saw snow on the RV the first morning we awoke there. Good thing the heater works well. On the way to Banff one of the things we noticed were bridges that had no road on either side of Rt 1. They were built to allow animals to cross the highway without getting hit. Really nice and unobtrusive...

Sep 16, 2015 - From Jasper to Banff and our first snow

It is a good thing Debi thought we should go to the Icefields Center earlier because our trip there on the way to Banff was cloudy and snowy. We had plenty of time so we stopped at Athabasca Falls and Debi took a hike on the Parker Ridge Trail. Both very beautiful. We had a chance to see some far away mountain goats-hope you can see them-and we ran into our first snow. While stopped waiting for road construction it started to snow and it was snowing pretty heavily at our highest elevation which was over 6800 feet. Fortunately the roads...
