May 21, 2018 - Cypress Hills, Alberta

May 19 Happily we wake up to no rain and the cloud is high enough that we can at least enjoy the mountain scenery before we leave Waterton Lakes. As we go for our morning walk a group of deer wander through the town site (Bowie is not sure what to make if them). The Prince of Wales hotel is still there surrounded by burnt forest and is just about to open for the season. We were able to walk around the grounds and see the stunning view down the lake. On our drive out of the park a bear put in an appearance and crossed the road while all of...

May 14, 2017 - Elkwater

It was chilly when I got up this morning but I certainly didn’t expect to find it snowing outside. Two days ago it was 30C in Medicine Hat so this cold snap was most unexpected. It changed my plans for the day quite drastically because I’d intended to take lots of beautiful walks. It snowed, then rained most of the morning but the weather slowly cleared & by mid-afternoon there were a few patches of sunshine. I went for a short walk along Beaver Creek but didn’t like the look of the sky so hurried home. Just as well I did because about 15...

May 13, 2017 - Medicine Hat to Elkwater

I had a minor disaster last night. I don’t usually buy Australian wine when I’m travelling but the liquor store in Drumheller didn’t have a very good selection of sparkling wine so I ended up buying a bottle of Seaview. Being Friday night, I got out the Seaview & didn’t like the sound of the pop. One taste told me it was definitely off so I had to tip the whole bottle out. To add insult to injury, it was probably the most expensive bottle of Seaview I’d ever bought. Fortunately I also had some Sav Blanc, but I do like the bubbles once a...

May 4, 2016 - Fernie to Cypress Hills, AB

Another long day, we stopped at Fort McLeod and checked out the museum.plan was then to go to Lethbridge and maybe stay, then we figured we can make Medicine Hat if we push it, so once at Medicine Hat we decided to go to Cypress Hills for the night, just a short 50kms drive. Only problem there was, no running water, they had snow last week, and only limited number of stalls with power. We found one and decided to camp. Even backed in to a fairly tight spot, we did, might be getting the hang of this yet! It seems our water pump might be...

Sep 9, 2014 - Day 31 - Cypress Hills

What a surprise waking up and seeing snow on the ground! Once we got out of Cypress Hills, the snow changed to rain. We stopped for almost 3 hours in Maple Creek, SK, just south of the Trans-Canada highway - doing laundry, getting some food and gas - hoping the weather would improve so that we could make the planned visit to The Great Sandhills. Unfortunately, the rain continued, so we decided to continue west on the Trans-Canada. We are in an RV park in Brooks, AB, near the highway, so we can get on our way early (well, early for us) and...

Sep 8, 2014 - Day 30 - Grasslands to Cypress Hills

We had a very windy night and a dramatic change in temperature (happy we weren't still in our pop-up trailer). After breakfast and a walk, we set out for Cypress Hills - a lovely park where we camped with our three kids in 1988. On the way out of Grasslands, we finally saw a wild bison, two in fact, one at a distance and one sauntering across the road right in front of us, not bothered at all by our presence (see photos). Arrived at Cypress Hills (highest point in Canada between the Rockies and Labrador) after 3PM and had a nice (M&M's)...

Aug 3, 2013 - Elkwater Lake, Alberta

Second day at the Reunion – not sure where the time went! The Reunion is at Elkwater Lake in Cypress Hills Provincial Park. The park is located in the bad lands in Southern Alberta. The terrain goes from nothing to Ireland like rolling hills and lush vegetation. The weather was a bit rainy the first evening and sunny and warm today. Friday night was our Kaiser and poker tournaments. Today was golf and bocee ball tournaments followed by dinner and dance and more poker….. We have family from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC and a few...
