Sep 9, 2015 - From Toad River to Edmonton

September 8, 2015 We left Toad River and traveled to Dawson Creek where the Alcan Highway starts. We made the whole Alcan without a broken windshield or busted tire. Pretty amazing considering the condition of the road; they are doing major construction on it this summer. Besides that it rained off and on and it was a gravely, smeary mess. Only once did I fear for the windshield as I watched a rock sail from a truck through the air with my wife ducking and hit the windshield; not cracks or chips so I feel very blessed. September 9,...

Aug 19, 2015 - Here We Go - Edmonton to Toronto

Al’s brilliant idea had us leaving a day earlier than planned. Initially the school had us departing on the 20th and completing both legs of the trip in one LONG day and night. The first leg, Edmonton – Toronto, would have departed at 6 am so that meant being at the airport by 4 am and getting up by 3 am. That sounds crazy already! Once in Toronto around noon we had a two-hour window to catch the next flight direct to Abu Dhabi. This leg was just over 13 hours! Yikes we are too old for that. Christine dropped us off at the airport for 9am....

Aug 15, 2015 - Back home!

Day 17 – Leah Well here we are almost a week later, and I’m finally getting around to doing the blog for the last day. It’s sad to see the vacation over, so maybe that is a partial reason for the procrastination. So without any further excuses, here we go: Sunday morning we actually managed to sleep in! We woke up around 8:45am, there was a crow-style and squirrel-style (all natural) alarm clock that had tried to wake us up earlier, but we managed to resist. I swear every other morning; it was a crow ca, caing right outside our tent that...

Aug 6, 2015 - Two Weeks to Departure!

Two weeks before we go! Yikes, we are not feeling close to ready however, we do have our house rented out. Our great neighbours will be keeping an eye out and helping where necessary. That is all falling into place. Al had an amazing idea to change our flight. Initially we were set to depart on August 20 from EIA at 6 am for our flight to Toronto which meant that we would have had to leave our home by 3 am to get to the airport 2 hours before our flight. We would have a 2 hour layover in Toronto before departing for the next direct 13 hour...

Jul 24, 2015 - And We're off

Day 1 – Leah We packed and we packed and we checked our list twice, the bikes are packed with camera and spice. OK, that’s plenty of rhyming for now. The packing last night was a tad chaotic, but we managed to get the gear and (hopefully) everything we need all together and crammed onto our bikes. Keith’s bike is named Roberto and mine is Betsy. Roberto is carrying the heavier load this trip, as he has the new tour pack to test out and so far it has all of our cooking and sleeping gear and even a kitchen sink. We both went to work this...

Jul 24, 2015 - Chez mononcle Rosario, Larkspur Edmonton

Jul 16, 2015 - Final Reflections

Well, we made it home today. We woke to the sound of rain pitter pattering on the roof. By the time we had breakfast it was a good going storm. This is only the second time in 9 weeks that we have had to pack up in the rain. Unfortunately, today we also had to winterize the trailer, which involves extra work, much of it outside. We got it done and, rather wet, we were on the road by our targeted time of 10:00 am. We drove north round Calgary on the east Stony Trail. This is the first time we have used this leg of their ring road and it sure...

Jun 29, 2015 - Edmonton Alberta

Today has been strictly a travel day with stops only for fuel and lunch. We left Dawson Creek late at around 10am and then on top of that we lost an hour due to the time change. We covered 600km with one lunch stop for 20 minutes and one fuel stop for 30 minutes. It takes longer for fuel just because trying to find a place we can get in while towing the car is challenging. Reason being we can't back up and our turning radius is limited. We have been impressed with how clean Canada has been during this portion of the trip and with how...

May 25, 2015 - Day 4 - Edmonton AB

This morning we were up bright and early again. Went down stairs to have a continental breakfast. It was really good, lots of it. I had eggs and waffles and sausages. Jane just had eggs and sausages. Once finished we went back up stairs to our room. I just happen to check Facebook and noticed that I had received a message from my cousin Amanda. She was asking if I was in Edmonton. We swapped phone numbers and switched over to texting each other. We agreed to meet around noon at the hotel. Then we walked over to the mall and found a small...

May 24, 2015 - Day 3 - Edmonton AB

We were up and mobile by 7 AM. We went downstairs for a continental breakfast. It was set up like a buffet, so you kind of helped yourself to what ever you wanted to eat. After breakfast we went for another swim until just before check out time at 11 AM. After checking out we loaded the car and was off to Edmonton. Again just following the directions on the GPS on my IPhone 6 plus. A long the way the GPS brought us to a highway that was closed. It appeared that a bridge had been washed out. But there were no detour signs giving you...

Oct 17, 2014 - Day 42

Hello again, Today was a pretty relaxing day as we chilled out a bit before spending the next 3 day crossing over the Canadian Rockies. So after enjoying a McDonalds muffin, we headed out from Calgary and drove a little over 300kms north through Canada before arriving just after midday in Edmonton making our first stop in the city at the West Edmonton Mall. This place is huge with over 200 shops but it also have an indoor water park, theme park, aquarium, bowling alley and more restaurants than you could possibly need. But as Edmonton...

Sep 23, 2014 - Road Trip

Probably not a very good title for this entry - it's all pretty much a road trip! Let's say this a side trip instead. We needed a break (especially Larry) from the resort and we were getting antsy being in one place for so long. It was an amazing trip, good and bad mixed together. We had every conceivable weather except thunder, lightning and hail. Larry actually had to wear long pants a couple of times and Maureen tried out her winter jacket and gloves. We were challenged by having only 30 amp service, dry-camped, and slept with all the...
