Sep 1, 2014 - Edmonton West

A long day but very enjoyable. We were glad to get to Jasper and sip on a beer. Then off to Earl's for a feed of ribs and a bottle of wine. That did it, barely made it back to the motel and crashed. Looking forward to a lazy day exploring Jasper tomorrow.

Aug 30, 2014 - SW USA - Fall 2014

On 31 August 2014, I will drive south in my trusty Nissan to visit Larry Calloway in Crestone, Colorado. I'm getting too old to do the trip in a 24 hour driving marathon. And with three months off, I have time to wander along and take 2 or 3 days to drive there. From early September to the end of November 2014, Larry and I will explore the American South West. We are heading to the Paria River area in southern Utah/Northern Arizona area in early September. Here's a map of the whole area. After many years with no success nabbing a permit on...

Jul 2, 2014 - Lazy Day

We had a lazy day today but ended up being quite busy. We drove the RV to Safeway to get some more shopping in. Whilst there we had the obligatory Tim Horton’s and a donut. That took a good couple of hours. We got back to the RV and made Chicken Curry for tea later on in the day. Mum, me and Paul all went to do some geocaching and out of the 3 we went looking for we only found 1. We ended up at the top of the ski slope which was right next to our campsite. We drove the RV into Edmonton centre to go and do our Segway ride. Paul was going to...

Jul 1, 2014 - Edmonton Mall

Today we are going to Edmonton Mall and got up early to find out what time the bus leaves and where. We got all out money ready and as we were walking up the hill towards the bus it was already heating up. We caught the correct bus to Edmonton Mall and once we walked in I was in awe of the place. It had so many shops in it and we never passed the same shop twice unless we wanted to. There was a hockey match on and all the young kids were playing. I have seen hockey matches on TV but to see them in real life is very different. The kids were...

Canada 2014

Jun 9, 2014 - Edmonton, AB - June 2014

In keeping with our goal of visiting all the capitals in the US, we visited Alberta's Capital, Edomonton. The legislative building is very impressive like so many of those in the US. Entering the rotunda, marble is everywhere. As you look up, there are live palm trees at the top floor. The architect was an american that designed the building with greek and roman nuances and opulence. It has similarities to the State House of Rhode Island in the US. The construction started in 1907 and was finished in 1913 We were fortunate to have had a...

May 27, 2014 - Jasper & Edmonton

The drive from Banff to Jasper was just magnificent. It's called the Icefield's Parkway. We stopped on the way at the new Skywalk, and the Columbia Glacier. Both fabulous. Jasper was so gorgeous. Steve and I took a Wildlife driving tour. We saw Big Horn Sheep, mountain goats, elk, a moose, 2 grizzly bears, and 4 black bears. The sheep and goats were up so high. Thank goodness for my 42 times zoom. I needed it. We found good WiFi at Tim Horton's, and were able to upload all our pictures. After I finished at Horton's I drove out to Maligne...

May 11, 2014 - Home - and some reflections

We were up at 7:30 a.m. Per our alarm clock and got ready without much haste then went down to the airport for breakfast and when Christine asked the time, I responded that it was 7:45. Realizing something was wrong, we checked the time on a clock (being Frankfurt Airport, when you want something you have to look long and hard to find it) and, sure enough, my watch was correct. We then realized that the alarm was still set on Jerusalem time and we were up an hour earlier than we planned. How we did not notice this yesterday, we do not...

Wedding in Edmonton

Apr 2, 2014 - Setting Off

We were leaving the house at 3 pm today, so we had plenty time to collect our things and do the last minute tasks before Fiona came to pick us up, She had us out to the airport in plenty and time and after goodbyes, we checked in and were advised that our ticket entitled us to the use of the Plaza Lounge while we waited. This was a great facility with comfortable chairs and a buffet. While the selection was not o my liking, Christine found enough to keep her going till we boarded the plane. The seats were spacious and the attention from the...

Mar 24, 2014 - Pilgrim's Blessing

At the end of my second week on the Camino in the spring of 2011, after a difficult, long and lonely walk over mountains to San Juan de Ortego, I spent the evening in an old unheated stone church with 20 pilgrims. We huddled together for warmth and received these encouraging words of blessing, in Spanish, from the local priest: "Oh God, please, through the intercession of San Juan de Ortega, in whose tomb we are now, save these children of yours who, for the love of your name, make the Camino de Santiago. Be for them, on the road,...

Mar 21, 2014 - Edmonton - Packing

The little bag I purchased looks perfect for the clothing I want to bring. But my hiking poles don't fit. If I pack my hiking boots, there really isn't room for anything else. I'm going to have to rethink how I will pack. I will dive back down into the luggage room and see what else I can find. Folks have been leaving luggage in my house for decades and I've developed an entire room with luggage so I'm sure I can find something...but hopefully something with rollers! Now is the time to get out your maps so you can follow our trip...Find...

Mar 1, 2014 - Edmonton - getting organized

First day off work and I'm trying to set up a travel blog for friends to follow Patricia Henderson and me as we slog along the 800 km Camino Frances from St. Jean Pied-de-Port, France to Santiago de Compestella, Spain. It's always difficult to try to find a way to keep in touch with family and friends along the route. In the past I've sent batch e-mails but this looks to be an easier way to do the same thing. And even better, I'm told I can add photo to the journal entry. I've added to this post a photo from my back yard. Anyone who has...
