Jul 16, 2012 - Day 1 - We are off
Monday July 16, 2012. Official start to the journey. Day 1 Odometer Reads 26300 miles. Sunny but smoke haze from forest fires. Finally the day has arrived after years of dreaming, then planning, now actually doing. I am ready for the trip but not for the leaving. Thirty-six years in Fort McMurray have been good to us. We raised our three terrific daughters and now have four grand-children to love and miss as well. We were hitching up the car to the motor home with all the grand kids helping. We lost our help when the city decided to flush...Jump to full entry

I'm actually posting this journal entry on July 20. The WiFi at Glowing Embers was spotty at best. And SLOW!! My friend Karen K. is writing her own travel journal and she can attest, It sets everything back a day or two or maybe three. When photo uploading is slow you want to pull your hair out. We are so spoiled with our WiFi and cell service in the US. It's the best!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunday July 15--The drive to Edmonton is a short 3 hours. Just about an...Jump to full entry

We left our mosquitoes in Jasper and traveled across to Edmonton, Alberta today….saw a huge elk along the way, but not much of anything else photo worthy. Glowing Embers Campground was in a great location just outside of town only 10 min. from the famous West Edmonton Mall. For those who haven’t heard about this place, it’s one of the largest malls in the world…so over the top it has amusement parks inside, an indoor wave pool complete with a beach setting, etc….over 800 stores and covers the area of 115 football fields….SO…”Turn me loose,...Jump to full entry

Cleared customs and immigration to Canada. Took about one hour. Very nice folks and very professional. This is our first time in Canada. Lots of farm land. Many nice ranches. Very good roads and well marked. It took a little while to get use to the Kilometers instead of miles. Normal speed limit is 110 KM WOW however it is 68 mph. Went through Calgary. A beautiful modern looking city. We passed sign saying "MA Me O Beach" Would like to know what that meant. Many towns and names are strange to us. Charlotte mentioned "what would these folks...Jump to full entry

Fri, 11 May: Another cold nite but again we were snug under our bankets with the bedroom furnace on low. We awoke a bit before seven and managed to heat up our morning tea without tripping the power off due to low voltage. Low amperage service we can live with, but low voltage is a real pain...
We went through our checklist and backed the coach out of the spot due to some inconsiderate dolt's double parked pickup was blocking our exit. We connected Dinkum and rolled out of the Whispering Spruce
mudhole, er, RV Park at 0840.
Apr 15, 2012 - Planning, packing
The planning process is well underway for my spring sojourn. I have booked my flights to and from Edmonton, going the open jaw route into Edinburgh and out of Dublin, and from Edinburgh to Sibiu to Dublin flights. Having tickets in hand always makes the whole process seem more real. I've also booked most of my accommodation because I like to know I have a place to sleep and some of my favorite places tend to book up pretty fast. I always book my hostels through www.hostelworld.com, and have never been disappointed. They have a good rating...Jump to full entry

Mar 31, 2012 - A whole lot of Nice!
Bonjour chers amis et families, A wwwwwhhhhhhhooooooollllllleeee lot of Nice! We had a great last day on the Riviera, spending time in the old Nice with the open air markets as vendors peddled their quality goods to tourists and locals alike. If you like fresh, organic fruits and vegetables and flowers of every shapes and sizes, you'll like this market! An unofficial day of free time quickly became a day on the beach and a day in the markets and shops! Many students took the opportunity to have a sit down lunch in a French restaurant where...Jump to full entry
Mar 30, 2012 - La Cote d'Azur!!!!!
Bonjour les Amis! There are apparently 40 towns and cities that are in the mountains of the French Riviera......here are the days events: 1. Nice to Grasse - an early morning coach ride to the city of Grasse, which is very famous for it's intensive production of the finest perfumes, eaux de toilettes, etc. in the world - a very interesting lesson in chemistry, agriculture and high finances was followed by a quick lesson in marketing!...........great prices for great value however! 2. Grasse to St.Paul de Vence - take a breath, close your...Jump to full entry
Mar 29, 2012 - Nice is really, really, nice!
Good morning or afternoon or evening! Well, we left on the TGV for Nice this morning leaving the quaint city of Avignon and arriving three hours later in the French Riviiera! We had an early afternoon coach tour touching the highlights of this beautiful Mediterranean port city. Surprisingly enough (or not), the highlight of the afternoon seemed to be the free visit to the candy factory! Now when I say "free", I speak of the admission.....where they get you is on the sales! I don't have much of a sweet tooth but I can say that these candies...Jump to full entry
Mar 28, 2012 - Arles, Aigues Mortes & Saintes Marie de la mer
Good evening! 1. Arles Truly incredible..........Roman ruins and a Roman amphitheatre. The amphitheatre is a World Heritage UNESCO site. The whole city is a virtual archeological paradise, with Roman, medieval and gothic churches and sites! 2. Aigues Mortes A fortified city along the Mediteranean Sea, in absolutely perfect condition. A very charming town within the confines of the impressive Ramparts 3. Saintes Marie de la mer A little bit of Greece in Southern France as we came upon white houses and buildings with blue trims and accents....Jump to full entry
Mar 27, 2012 - Avignon!
Bonsoir! Well, we left Paris with a tear in our eye as we took the TGV (Train a Grande Vitesse) for a two and a half hour ride to Avignon. Upon arrival, we were greeted by our guide and bus driver as we quickly meandered towards the "Pont du Gard". This monumental feat of architecture was created by the Romans to bring safe drinking water from the mountains to the lower lying villages. This was really quite a site to behold and the United Nations has declared it a world heritage site under the direction of UNESCO. If your son or daughter...Jump to full entry
