Jun 5, 2019 - East to Grande Prairie, Alberta

Our trek to Alaska has been side-tracked due to a transmission problem. We were transported on a low-bed to one facility yesterday in Fort St. John yesterday only to be told this morning that they are closing that Service Center and we had to be low-bedded another 3 hours in the wrong direction to Grande Prairie, Alberta to the company’s other location. They are a large chain across Canada. Tomorrow we should find out how serious the damage is and how long to fix it. One more thing, we took a rock chip to our car’s windshield as we followed...

Jul 31, 2018 - Grande Prairie

The motorhome hasn’t been riding as smoothly as I thought it should so I had it booked in for a wheel alignment this morning. The bloke looked at it & found the tread had separated on one of the inside rear tyres so that it had worn smooth in places. His first suggestion was that I buy 4 new tyres for the back but he realized quite quickly that it wasn’t going to happen. My spare was a new Goodyear, probably original & the other tyres were all ½ worn Hankooks so replacing the damaged tyre with the spare wasn’t going to work. He didn’t carry...

Jul 30, 2018 - Grande Prairie

After such a tiring day yesterday, I didn’t feel like packing up & driving anywhere today. I’m staying in the Rotary campground which is in town & within walking distance of shops, next door to the casino & across the park from the Visitors Centre. I walked across the park to the Visitors Centre, resisting the lure of casino & shops. The girl was very knowledgeable & gave me lots of good stuff about the Peace River area where I’m headed next. It’s also a heritage centre & has excellent displays about the attractions of Grande Prairie,...

Jul 29, 2018 - Hinton to Grande Prairie

The only exciting thing that happened yesterday was that I dropped a pan of pasta sauce as I was taking it out of the microwave. It not only went all over the floor but down the heater vent which is in a silly place right in front of the kitchen sink. Had fun cleaning it all up but fortunately there were only a few small splatters on the carpet. Highway 40 north from Hinton calls itself the scenic route to Alaska. It started off OK although not as scenic as the roads I’ve been used to recently. I was thinking how nice it was without all the...

Jul 22, 2018 - Generator

Margret facetimed her sister in Germany this morning. Everyone off to church today. George's generator broke down today. Not good. We use it to run a small freezer in the back of his truck. This is to put all the fish acquired while fishing etc. So we spent a few hours trying to get it up and running. However to no avail. Off to Princess Auto to buy a new one. Once we got it back to the truck, fueled and oiled up. Checked it out, perfect. George runs it when we are traveling to keep the freezer running. Happy hour at George's and then we...

Jul 21, 2018 - Dinosaur Museum

More pics (out of order) Slept in today. Margret made a nice brunch. Bacon, eggs, fried tomatoes, toast & coffee. Then we went to the 'Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum. It was more than I had expected. Not as big as the one in Drumheller but interesting. We had lunch there. Margret and I had French Onion Soup along with Garlic Toast. Tasty! After we came back we went grocery shopping and picked up a nice bottle of wine for happy hour. As there are only 4 of us now, a bottle of wine will suffice! Picked up some snacks also. Didn't require...

Jul 20, 2018 - Visiting the Park then to GP

Remember the photos may not correspond with the day! But I hope they will still be enjoyed! It rained throughout the night. After breakfast we toured the old buildings, very interesting history. Then we went into the visitor centre to look around. When we came out the downpour started again. I put on my rain jacket to prepare for the next leg of our adventure, then the rain stopped... for now! However on the road to Grande Prairie it started again. We stopped on the road to phone for reservations in GP. But not realizing that the summer...

Jun 15, 2016 - Stormy Wednesday

Well it turned out to be a mistake not to leave yesterday late afternoon. The weather started worsening during the night. I was awakened several times during the night due to the howling wind and the rain banging on the roof. I remember thinking to myself, it will clear by morning. Better be stormy now then when we are traveling. Wrong! By the morning the storm had gotten worse and we opted not to leave. The flags were blowing straight, the trees were bent from the force of the wind and the light poles in the Walmart parking lot were...

Jun 13, 2016 - Grande Prairie

It was a rather lengthy drive from Jasper and the beauty of the Canadian Rockies to Grande Praire, which as the name says is a prairie. No longer beautiful scenery. We said good bye to mountain peaks, emerald lakes and scenic beauty and hello to logging and coal mining. Gassed up in Hinton, about .10 less a liter than in Jasper and then drove on. For quite a while there were signs warning of caribou, but not one to be seen (if you don't count the caribous metal sculptures. We pulled into Grande Prairie fairly late and opted to save the $50...

Jun 2, 2016 - Grande Prairie

We stocked up on things we thought we might run out of but as it turns out there would be places on down the road where supplies were available. We also picked up a blackout curtain for the bedroom. We kept thinking we were getting later and later sunsets, and we were. Sunset last night was at 10 pm. Tonight since we've moved even further north sunset will be at 10:30. It seems pretty weird but we will be in the land of the midnight sun! Plan to be around Fairbanks around June 21 for the longest day of the year. We traveled north out of...

Jul 4, 2015 - Day 7 (Internet connection BAD) Jasper AB

Day 7: NOTE: by the way, internet & cell phone coverage are terrible. We have texting and data, but cannot connect for enough time to load pics onto the blog site, argh…. We were up early 6:00am with a grab-n-go breakfast. Our goal to day was to drive to Grand Prairie Alberta about 350 miles away. As we drove out of the Canadian Rockies of the Jasper area we came across wild mountain goats grazing along the roadside. We traveled about 80 miles then made our turn north through coal mine country of Alberta, as well as the Canadian oil...

North to Alaska 2015

Jun 1, 2015 - Northern Alberta

Long day and only 500 miles 784 KM. Lots of open low rolling hills. Better gas mileage when not in mountains. We learned that with BOA you need to get the banks permission to travel outside the 50 states. I guess it is good they are monitoring my CC usage to protect me but it was pain to turn the cards back on. I should have send a message to the CC division to list the states and Canada then I would not have had this problem. Otherwise we saw good scenery and nice people. Roads were all paved and no construction until we got to...
