Aug 19, 2018 - Jasper

Arrived at Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada yesterday. It is an amazingly beautiful National park and we've been to quite a few of them. The Canadian people sure appreciate and are very respectful of their natural resources. The only downsides were some lingering smoke from the British Columbia fires and the devastation caused by the pine bark beetle which causes trees to turn brown and dry out. Did an amazing 6 mile hike in the 5 lakes area on Sunday. Some kayaking and mountain biking is in store for Monday. We are staying in the...

Aug 31, 2017 - Jasper

August 31st Broke camp and headed up the Icefields Parkway to Jasper. We saw a black bear at Bow Lake…… lunch overlooking the Saskatchewan River and a walk up Parker Ridge. In the briefing notes it mentioned bringing bear spray or a bear bell. Spray is $45 and it turned out the guides have that and were very surprised it was on the list. On the advice of the staff at Jasper National Parks I bought a whistle instead of a bell 𿔔 as the bell gets very annoying. I was advised to just blow bell if coming up to a blind corner just to warn any...

Aug 29, 2016 - Jasper National Park - Icelands Parkway

So many beautiful sites and only allowed to upload 10 photos. We had an awesome day. Up until late afternoon, it was windy and cool but turned out beautiful. It was a long day. We went from Canmore to Jasper, along the Iceland Parkway through the Banff and Jasper National Parks, making many stops along the way. Such beautiful sites. How can anyone say there isn't a God! We were in awe at every turn. We started out around 8:00 am and got back to Canmore around 10:00 pm. If you ever get the opportunity, you must come see the Canadian Rockies....

Jul 11, 2016 - Grande Prairie to Jasper

Our tour of Grande Prairie was mostly of shopping centers and restaurants. We did see the sculptured buildings of the college-university. They have been built to resemble the northern lights. They are of various colors of red brick and appear to shimmer especially when stared at. From here we drove south the next morning along highway 40 through high rolling foothills to Grand Cache which is nestled in a high scenic valley. Along the way we saw little lakes and streams amid borial forests. We passed a silver-back grizzly intent upon a meal...

Left Lake Louise with sun and cloud and 12°C for the Icefields Parkway to Jasper. Very nice drive up the parkway. The scenery was beautiful. We stayed at Wapiti National Park for the night with no services. It's just 5 minutes outside of Jasper. More rain overnight.

Jun 9, 2016 - Banff ....Jasper National Park

Our last night in Banff we treated ourselves to Happy Hour at the Banff Springs Fairmont Hotel. Built in 1888 to draw people to Banff on the new railroad, it remains a lovely place. People have always been able to see pictures in rock formations, and one very obvious one in Banff is the Sleeping Bison. This is the mountain the first surveyor recommended building a tunnel through for the railroad, but eventually they saved 12,000,000 dollars and 1 1/2 years by simply going around the mountain so the Bison is still sleeping even though the...

Alaska Trip 2016

Sep 16, 2015 - more of Jasper

Saturday the 12th was also a great weather day. First time in shorts since Chicken, AK. Decided to drive down to the Icefield Center. This is where we were able to go out onto the glacier via these strange looking busses. How exciting to be able to stand on top of a glacier and take pictures. A great experience. Between two of the glaciers is an ancient forest--and I mean thousand of year old trees. They grow there--very, very slowly, because it is protected from the harsh elements because of where it is on the mountain. And yes, it is even...

Finally arrived in Jasper on Thursday the 10th. Stayed in Wapitii campground, part of the National Park. Drove into town and stocked up at the grocery and wine store and had dinner at a great little restaurant. Debi said the town of Jasper reminded her of what she thinks Lake Tahoe looks like. Of course neither of us has been to Lake Tahoe, but I agreed with her. Friday we drove up to Lake Maligne. What a great trip--Debi said it was her best day yet. A great scenic drive up and at the lake we took the boat ride. It was certainly one of the...

The trip from Banff to Jasper, AB is one of the most beautiful drives in North America. It covered 185 miles and traveled the Icefields Parkway for most of the trip. About halfway, you cross into Jasper National Park from Banff National Park. The scenery is remarkable as you view peak after peak and glacier after glacier. About halfway is also the Icefields Discovery Centre positioned in an area that has five glaciers viewable from one spot. The largest of those five is the Athabasca Glacier and they have specially configured buses that...

Lake Day! Off we went to Pyramid Lake; but we forgot the map so we drove through the residential district north/south and east/west until a Pyramid Lake turn here signed was spotted. It was an unlikely street for a large tourist attraction, a suburban street lined with houses, schools then forest and eventually the lake. We parked by the access to Pyramid Island and horse shoe shaped trail provided many viewpoints of the Pyramid Lake and the surrounding mountains. The morning was sunny and bright, perfect conditions for the smooth lake to...

Alaska Trip 2015

Jun 22, 2015 - Jasper, Alberta Canada

Scott, Bear and I took the Jasper Sky Tram and hiked up the trails. The 7 minute ride on the 51 year old German engineered tram rode smoothly high over three ecosystems, forest, pre-alpine and alpine! The viewing platform at the top provided a view of the valley including Jasper, the valley of 5 lakes and it was spectacular. The view uphill was daunting with steep hiking trials up to the top of the mountain! Once out on the trail we spotted a fat and very furry Marmot sunning in a rock pile. Taking the trail with switchbacks we admired the...

Alaska Trip 2015

Jun 21, 2015 - Jasper, Aberta

We visited Banff and Lake Louise before heading to the Columbia Icefield Highway. The highlight was a walk out on the Glacier Skywalk. A suspended platform 918 feet above the valley floor. We arrived in Jasper and found a campsite at the Whistler Campground. Today was the Summer Solstice.
