Aug 6, 2018 - Finally, the start of my blog!

Hello to all my family and friends It’s a beautiful blue sky summer’s day here in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The locals are complaining about the heat but to anyone from Qld, it’s not hot! The weather bureau has even been sending heat warnings, as daytime highs have been expected to reach 29 degrees!!! Admittedly, it has been quite humid but not so hot that I can’t walk around in the sun all day and not even come close to being sunburnt. I’ve been having a fabulous time which explains why you haven’t received any emails from me. It also...

Aug 1, 2018 - Travel day back to Halifax

Today was another beautiful day. Breakfast was at 8:00. This morning we ate with Gail & Joyce. The were both college professors, one teaching Spanish and the other chemistry. They are neighbors who travel together. We left the hotel at 9:00 for our 5 minute drive to the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site. Michael from the center joined us on the bus to give a quick background about Bell. Alexander was born in Scotland, his fatherly then moved the family to Ontario. Alexander moved to Boston to teach the deaf. He invented the...

Jul 22, 2018 - Peggy's Cove and a walk in Lundenburg

Oh, boy! A rainy day, again. Buffet breakfast was with Joanne and Richard from Boulder, Colorado (he had been a teacher/principal and she was a high school math teacher). Today we traveled out to Peggy's Cove to the most picturesque lighthouse, found on post cards throughout the region. On the way out, Kim passed around three plastic sleeves - one with Canadian coins, one with Canadian currency, and the third with Canadian Tire bonus money from their reward program that looks like currency. We also had to write two truths and one lie on a...

Jul 21, 2018 - A Day in Halifax

Today is the first official day of our Grand Circle Tour entitled Nova Scotia & the Canadian Maritimes. I awoke to rain and fog! What?? Hopefully it clears up. We went down to the buffet breakfast (very nice) and sat with a couple from Washington, Lila and Gary and had a lovely conversation about traveling, he was in the Navy, etc. At 9:00 we met in the 2nd floor meeting room for our introductions and briefing. Kim introduced herself - before becoming a tour guide, she worked for the Canadian government. She went over the usual stuff -...

Jul 20, 2018 - Travel day to Halifax

Today was a travel day to Halifax, Nova Scotia (NS). Our ride to the airport was at 8:30, and breakfast began at 7:30, so we set the alarm for 6:30. I got up before the alarm and saw a strange site in the sky - a big yellow bright light! I also could see things in the distance I have not seen before - there was no fog! Hallelujah! We were the first couple at breakfast and had a nice homemade breakfast (ham & cheese omelette for me, and Jean had French toast again). I finalized my packing and took it downstairs, while Jean would come down...

Jul 19, 2018 - Ile-aux-Marins Walking Tour

We had been lucky with only heavy fog and being overcast for the last few days, but it broke loose today with the rain. I was so glad I had bought that umbrella yesterday. We ate breakfast at 8:40 because we had a 9:45 tour. We met our guide, Helene at the boat dock for our 12 minute ride over to Ile-aux-Marins, or the Sailor's Island. Luckily the small boat had an indoor cabin in which we could sit, out of the weather. Once on the island, we took our walking tour with Helene and another couple from Montreal in heavy rain (yes, we're...

Jul 18, 2018 - Architecture and Cultural Walking Tour

Today we had breakfast at 8:30 & returned to the room because the stores don't open until 10. We then hit the Post Office to mail a post card, and walked to the end of the town to the supermarket. I got a 150 cl (centiliter) bottle of water (the smallest they sell) and a small collapsable umbrella. We then walked back to the hotel room. About 12:00 Chloe came to clean our room, so we left (which was about the time we were going to leave) to go over to the Arche Museum & Archives to pay for our Architecture and Culture walking tour today at...

Jul 17, 2018 - Island of Saint Pierre

Today we went down to breakfast about 9:00. We met a young woman in the breakfast area. She took our order to cook us breakfast. I asked for an omelette, and Jean had French toast cooked to order. Nice. The weather was on and off today, no rain, but foggy, clear up a bit, foggy, repeat. I had to be quick to take a picture before the sun disappeared. We walked down to where we were to meet our bus for the island tour. There about 20 of us on the bus, all English speaking so our tour guide, Clementine did not have to do both languages. She...

Jul 16, 2018 - Fly to Saint Pierre

We went to breakfast about 9:30. Our flight to St. Pierre wasn't until 3:00. We checked out at 11:00, packed the car and went down by the lake to read until 12:00. (Check-in for our flight did not begin until 12:00.) I looked at the weather for St. Pierre and it looks like our run of wonderful weather is ending. The whole week has rain scheduled and highs of 61 degrees, bummer. The airport was only 11 km away from the inn. We arrived quickly, found our Park and Fly lot. The van was waiting to take us to the terminal. We were the only ones...

Jul 15, 2018 - Travel day to Nova Scotia

Breakfast was at 8:30 and we were served berries and yogurt on top of Cheerios, and a frittata. The other guests at the table were a couple from Germany and a couple from Switzerland (the French speaking region). We had a nice long discussion about traveling and favorite places everyone has visited. We relaxed in our room until 10:15 and then packed the car. Checkout was at 10:30, and were wanted to attend a church service, but it didn't start until 11:00. We drove around Sackville to kill some time. (I didn't want to sit in a pew for 1/2...

Jul 3, 2018 - Visit to The Citadel and Marine Museum in Halifax

July 3 – Visit to The Citadel and Marine Museum in Halifax The huge fortification is situated on a hill overlooking Halifax since 1749. Folks were dressed in 19 th century clothes and the soldiers in army uniforms who were practicing drill on the parade grounds. Our guide informed us that the fort was constructed due to the outbreak of the War of 1812 between the British and the States but there never was a battle at the site. A cannon is fired at noon every day as in the past when it would enable the ships in the harbor to synchronize...

Jul 2, 2018 - Quick Travel to Hammonds Plains the Tattoo Performance

July 2 – Quick Travel to Hammonds Plains the Tattoo Performance We had to travel about 50 miles to near Halifax, NS and set up camp so that we could board our bus at noon for the International Tattoo Show. The travel technique was to use a staging area at a mall near our new campground where we could remove our tow cars and then be able to pull into our campsites without a pause to unhook. All of us got on the bus on time. I had never heard of the TaToo Show. It is an assemblage of military bands and pipe-and-drum units which comes from the...
