Sep 11, 2013 - Northbrook, IL to Kitchener Ontario

September 11 Got back on the toll road (Hwy 294) to miss the Chicago traffic. Just as we left at 9:48 am there was a tribute to 9/11 on Sirius. Sobering moment. The GPS is taking us north of Detroit (through Lansing and Flint Hwy 69) so that we will enter Canada through Port Huron and/Sarnia. At the end of the day that might be more efficient than the Detroit/Windsor bridge. Crossed into Canada with no problems (even declaring our 6 bottles of wine). Within moments we ran into torrential rains and winds with tornados being reported on the...

Apr 24, 2013 - Getting Ready For Our Trip

Activated the website today. We are picking up the fifth wheel on Saturday in London. Will spend a couple of days getting it ready to travel and then on Tuesday we are heading to The Pinery Provincial Park for a shakedown trip. Had a few things fixed in the trailer over the winter and want to make sure everything is working before we head out. Busy cancelling newspaper, re-directing mail and gathering stuff we want to take with us. We had originally hoped to leave on May 1 but some things got in the way and we decided to push departure back...

Sep 29, 2012 - Ontario Province

We left the French Canadian campground on Friday, Sept. 28, and drove west on I-20 through Montreal. What a huge city! All the signs were in French and I tried to figure out what some of the words were. It's been a long time since I've had to speak any French. I-20 changed to Kings Hwy. 401 when we entered Ontario province. We stopped at a rest stop, called an OnRoute, for maps. Good to hear the staff speaking English. We stopped in Brockville at a Swiss Chalet for lunch and then at a Canadian Superstore for fuel. We turned off Hwy.401 onto...

Aug 26, 2011 - Last Day in Canada

With only one day left before I leave for 114 days I have to finish packing my back pack and say my final good byes. Packing has been difficult because I have to fit almost 4 months worth of clothing and other items into one pack. I've been limited to basically a couple outfits, 2 books, a camera, a journal, an iPod and a deck of cards. It still hasn't clicked in that I'll be away for almost a third of a year. I'm sure it will be tough at times to be away from home for that long, but I have no doubt that it will be an amazing and life...

Well we had a great day the wedding went off very well but it was a hot day all dressed up. Sep 19, 2009 - Kitchener

Friday Short drive today, but through Toronto which took 45 minutes in very heavy traffic. Navigator was at her best and not a single wrong turn. (It's just that the "driver" was finally listening to the navigator!!) We arrived at Doug Thiel's a little after noon. Doug is my golfing buddy in the winter. Had a great time, he took us around town and fed us well that evening. On Saturday mornings, it is a Thiel family tradition to go to breakfast. All of the brothers were there and we made a lot of noise and laughter. Hope you can read the...

May 5, 2009 - The New RIg

We are headed to London today to pick up our new fifth wheel. After our trip to the west last year we realized that if we were going to travel to the places in North America that we wanted to, we needed a bigger truck (3/4 ton instead of a 1/2 ton) and a more sturdy trailer. Got our truck in late April and our fifth wheel shortly after that. A fifth wheel attaches to the truck by a kingpin in the middle of the bed of the truck instead of to the bumper. The truck is a GMC 2500HD Crew Cab (full back seat) with a 6.0 L gas engine. The fifth...

Aug 23, 2008 - THE END

THE END Our 5 hour flight from Iceland to Canada was mostly memorable for catching an excellent view of Greenland :) Very cool. We slept, enjoyed good conversation with an English woman travelling to Canada to study for the year, and looking forward to getting out of the plane! Caleb's parents picked us up at the airport, and it was good to see familiar faces once again! It was also good to tell stories, share a few pictures, and catch up on news and happenings from home. We were home before we knew it to face the stack of mail, 12 unheard...
