We made a stop on our way from Massey to Mattawa at the mining town of Sudbury. Sudbury is the world’s largest producer of nickel. The Sudbury basin is believed to have been formed when a 6 mile wide meteor crashed into the earth 1.5 billion years ago. We stopped to visit Dynamic Earth, a facility focused on providing information relating to gold and nickel mining. Our visit included a tour of simulated nickel mines showing mining at the turn of the twentieth century, in the 1950s, and current day. We also had an opportunity to view a film...

Jul 25, 2010 - Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park

Thought the first day's drive would be about 8 hours. When we crossed into Canada via Cornwall at the Ontario/New York border our GPS system said we had another 9 hours of driving!! And we had already driven 4 hours. For some reason our navigation system is calculating time at 30 mph. Campground on a beautiful lake. Mosquitoes not bad!

We don't have any photos for today because Linda deleted them all. Shoot! Eastern Ontario has a rich landscape of dairy and beef farms. West of Pembroke, Ont. is managed forests of jack and red pine and mixedwood. We stayed at Babawasse Campground in Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park. A nice wooded area. ...BUT.... the back flies were out and when we packed to leave in the morning,they nailed us. We were spotted and bloody. The visious little buggers!

Aug 6, 2007 - Sault Saint Marie to Mattawa, ON

From Sault Saint Marie we drove east along the north shore of Lake Huron to Mattawa, ON. It was a long, uneventful drive through small town after small town. We passed Carolyn Beach and McAlpine Beach in Thessalon, ON, but no place to stop. I tried to get a photo through the windshield of the Carolyn Beach sign, but didn't get it. I was totally unprepared for the McAlpine Beach sign. (MacAlpine is my middle name.) Our destination was Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park. We were assigned site 28, a pull-thru with electric hookup. This...
