Jul 21, 2012 - Crossing Ontario

This was a driving day across Ontario. The Trans-Canada highway is a great road and we practically fell asleep driving. We came back into the States at Port Huron and looked at our last lighthouse – Fort Gratiot, the oldest lighthouse in Michigan. Tonight we stayed at a Cracker Barrel restaurant. It was a great site – we were parked under some trees with a field of wild flowers behind us.

Sep 15, 2009 - Locks of St Catherine

We spent today traveling up to St Catherine to watch the cargo ships go through a series of locks connecting Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. Welland Canal has 7 locks. The locks of the seaway has a usable length of 766ft, usable width of 80ft and depth of 30ft. Each lock holds around 21 million gallons of water and takes about 10 minutes to empty or fill. Lake Erie is 552ft higher than Lake Ontario thus needing the locks to connect the two. It was neat to be able to stand that close and watch these huge ships navigate through these locks. Some...

Jul 20, 2008 - Day47 to Day 49

Day 47 Today’s Plan; go down to the Niagara area. This is only a short hop today; about 2½ hours, so we take our time leaving. We purposely pick a route to the west that will keep us off the main highways. We plug along, slowed by many stop lights at first, but eventually reach some farming country and ramble along at an easy pace. By 11AM we can already feel the humidity building and temps in the high 20’s are expected. Feeling like the 30’s according to the radio. God bless GM for air conditioning. We turn south towards Hamilton after a...

Jun 25, 2008 - Niagra Falls, Ontario, CAN

Our mileage today was 291. Total Trip Miles to date: 1,819 Diesel cost $4.489 Today We left Avery, OH around 9:00 AM for our drive to Niagra Falls. We drove I-80, then I-90 which took us through Cleveland, OH and on up to Buffaloe, NY along the southern banks of Lake Erie. We stopped for fuel along the way in Ohio where diesel fuel appears to be AT LEAST $.30 cheaper per gallon than anywhere in NY or any of the New England States. We do carry 125 galons and can travel 700+ miles before refueling. MAYBE there will be a reduction in fuel...
