Jun 5, 2018 - Tobermory, Ontario

May 31st Today is the day we have chosen the routing that will take us from Espanola to South Baymouth for the ferry to Tobermory. It is a route neither Bill nor I have ever done before and we are excited about the opportunity to see something new in southern Ontario. Unfortunately the weather doesn’t cooperate and it is very windy and foggy. As we board the ferry you can only see about 15-20 m. off the side of the ship. It is probably one of the roughest ferry crossings I have ever experienced and there were sick bags positioned...

Sep 9, 2015 - More from Lands End Park

Yesterday we did a hike at Cyprus Lake national park down to what they call the Grotto. Very beautiful cove, with crystal clear green water. The rocks are all stacked like stairs. Well worth the few kilometre trek. Wished I had my bathing suit, although I think the water was pretty cold. The black flies are brutal!!! They bite like crazy, actually drawing blood with their painful little bites. We managed to avoid the rain during our hike, but as soon as we returned to the campground got poured on, and it didn't quit until middle of the...

Aug 14, 2015 - day11

Another fantastic day! Our boat tour went over 2 sunken ships , there were 2 small glass bottom 0laces but you could see them quite clearly from the boat. Went over to flower pot island. Some people got off and hiked around but it wasn't super great weather there. Came home and kids went for rides on pedal carts and then we hit the pool again. Head out tomorrow heading partway to kanata. Really been lucking out with weather.

Boat tour we wanted was booked so we wandered around town and checked out a cool bay. Took advantage of the warmer sunny day and hot the pool. Tomorrow we're heading out early to the grottos. Friday were doing the boat ride. Very busy area. Great spending my birthday with Laura and family, steak and shrimp for supper. Yummy

Jul 25, 2013 - Sheguindah (ON) to Tobermory (ON)

Today's ride was very short, taking us from Sheguindah down to South Baymouth, where we were to take the 1:30 pm ferry Chi-Cheemaun ("Big Canoe" in Ojibwe) across Lake Huron to Tobermory, located on the Northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula. The weather was great and the terrain was easy. However, within a couple of minutes of leaving the campground in Sheguindah at 7:40 am, I was riding up a gentle hill on a section of road with no shoulder when three cars approached me from the opposite direction. When they were about 100 m ahead, the last...

Sep 14, 2012 - Hiking in Bruce Peninsula National Park

After our morning boat trip, Kathy & I browsed the shops of Tobermory & managed to come away without spending TOO much money. Since we got caught out in a rain storm, we had to dash from store to store between showers & while in the shops we found a few trinkets we just couldn't pass up! Later in the afternoon, we headed out to Bruce Peninsula National Park to hike the trail to the famous Grotto. The rugged shoreline was breathtaking as you can see from the photos. When we got to the climb down to the Grotto, Kathy & I both decided that...

Sep 14, 2012 - Boat Trip on Georgian Bay

One of the highlights of our trip to Tobermory was our glass bottom boat tour out on Georgian Bay. Leaving from Little Tub Harbour, our first stop was Big Tub Harbour where we were able to view 2 submerged shipwrecks resting in the crystal clear water. This whole area is actually designated as a National Marine Park & is a popular diving area because of the number of shipwrecks that occurred here. The abundant rocky outcrops & fierce storms brought at least 22 ships to an end here. The tour continued out into the bay to Flowerpot Island,...

Living Our Dream

Sep 13, 2012 - Tobermory

Our longest road trip was a drive to the tip of the Bruce Penninsula, a strip of land separating Lake Huron from Georgian Bay. On the way up we stopped for a visit & delicious lunch with Kathy's sister in Port Elgin. After several more sightseeing stops along the beaches and Sauble Falls, we arrived in the quiet lakeside village of Tobermory. We loved our accomodations, the quaint little Blue Bay Motel, right on Little Tub Harbor within walking distance of everything in the village. The Chi-Cheemaun Ferry to Manitoulin Island docked right...

Living Our Dream

Aug 2, 2012 - Tobermory

Day Forty Three – Aug 2 Tobermory 60k Sixty kilometers today. Almost a rest day. It was supposed to be treated as a rest day but it didn’t turn out that way. There was head wind, there were flats, there was rain, there was hail, there were more flats; but nobody was late for the ferry. It was a relaxed start to the day because the ferry did not leave until 1:30 in the afternoon. Why hurry. Three hours of cycling and you’re there; do lunch; do ice cream and then board the ferry. Once off the ferry it was only 6k to the campground. Due to...

Aug 4, 2011 - Sheguiandah to Tobermory

August 4 – Day 43 Shequiandah to Tobermory K’s 60.87k Time 2h45m Average speed: 22.14k/H T to d 4538 The ride today was only 53 k to the ferry and then a short 8 to camp. One would think that after all the long rides we have done that this was easy but not so. There were good hills, if hills are every good, good roads for the first 30 k then bad roads and construction where we rode gravel for a bit. It really seemed like a 100 k but we did arrive at the ferry terminal well ahead of departure and had a second light breakfast and then a...

Canada & USA Journey

Jun 14, 2011 - Ferry to Tobermory

Even though I have lived in Ontario, I was not aware that there was a ferry connecting Manitoulin Island and the Bruce Peninsula. It is called the MS Chi-Cheemaun, which I was told means Big Canoe, and plies the waters between South Baymouth and Tobermory. I'm not sure if it crosses Lake Huron or Georgian Bay, because its route is right where they come together. I got to the dock at South Baymouth about four hours before sailing time, so had lots of time to explore the stores, have lunch and meet people. When I arrived, I misinterpreted...
