Aug 30, 2018 - Rossport to Wawa, Ontario

August 30, 2018 Sun shining and in the 50’s when we took off for Wawa. We are continuing east along Trans-Canada Hwy 17. Within a few miles we reached Rainbow Falls Trail which lead to a lovely cascading falls. The Provincial Parks make lots of use of boardwalks. Our “hike” was really walking down hundreds of stairs! All along the northern shore you see access points for the Casque Isles Trail. Unfortunately, there is no indication of degree of difficulty or terrain description for the various sections. Some are steep climbs with steps and...

May 31, 2018 - Wawa, Ontario

May 28 Early day on the road but we couldn’t leave the area without visiting one of the Amethyst mines we kept hearing about. A 3 kms drive along a very bad dirt road brought us to one of the oldest mines in the area. All open pit but not on a large scale it is mostly hand mined and the current seam we could look into was only 4 meters wide by 20 meters deep and only 60 meters long. The natural stone containing the amethyst are just very plain it isn’t until you break them open that you see the crystals. Our drive today takes us to White...

Jun 22, 2017 - Neys to Wawa

After a couple of sunny days it was back to overcast skies & drizzle this morning. I’m sure summer will come eventually but I wish it would hurry up. It was hard driving today with lots of road-works resulting in narrow single lane stretches & gusty winds so I didn’t come as far as I’d planned. I was going to stop at a campground at Lake Superior Provincial Park but it was a further 100 km & because the weather was so gloomy, I didn’t think the scenery would be that great. Wawa is almost exactly halfway between Neys & tomorrow night’s stop...

Sep 12, 2016 - Carvers - Wawa

- - It was a long drive today with all of the road construction, in some places about 10 kms long. Also, the roads were ROUGH and hilly. We will overnight at Wawa RV Park Paid $41 with tax,all hookups We were originally going to stay at a Provincial campground, but not at $41 with no hookups. We had lunch at Bober's in Bruce mines, one of the best cafes that we stopped for, it was as good as the Commissionaire from Kingston suggested. We had a brief stop over at the Agawa carvers and crafts store, very high quality. The gas has averaged...

Aug 11, 2016 - Wawa, On

After spending a month in Traverse City with our friends we reluctantly hit the road again. It was good that we did as we were full of wine bought from the many wineries in that area. Our next stop was Sault St. Marie, we stayed in a RV Park that overlooked the river; as it was near the locks we were able to see many ships go through as well as a mega yacht. One of our day trips were the Tahquamenon Falls upper and lower, very pretty. Another stop was the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum which displayed the many ships that went down in Lake...

Jul 14, 2016 - Wawa RV Campground

Last night we stayed at the KOA in Thunder Bay. We had the premium sites, and we didn’t have any wifi. Something is wrong with that picture. We also didn’t have good enough cell service to use my phone as a hot spot. Not good at all. We went out for dinner in Thunder Bay at Caribou Restaurant . It was delicious. This morning we continued our trip on Hwy 17 around the north side of Lake Superior. I got some pictures of the bridge over the Nipigon River, that was built last summer and spent most of the winter closed because the cables...

May 11, 2016 - Thunder Bay to Wawa

After spending a couple of nights in Thunder Bay at Happy Land, it was time to hit the road once more. Drove around Thunder Bay on the highway, which goes into the city, then veers away to the north, we missed the left at Albuquerque and wound up in the industrial park by the port! Turn around again Whittington! We survived and eventually made our way to the Terry Fox memorial. Our journey was along the north shore of Lake Superior through a few small towns, across the newly built Nipigon bridge, which still has wrapping on the joints where...

Jul 27, 2015 - Wawa, Ontario

May 21, 2015 - Day 2 - Detours (Sudbury to Wawa)

First night in the hotel was a bit rough. Chuck wasn't sure where he should sleep and Spike was hiding. Neither pet ate. We decided to get an early start but we were slow to get going. We had slow service in the restaurant. Then we had to pack the car. We have waaaay too much stuff to bring out. We decide that we have to figure out a way to consolidate stuff. We figure we'll get it together by Day 5! I manage to trick Spike and get her into the cage with minimum fuss. We load the CRV and hit the road. Woohoo! Day 2! Google directs us to...

Apr 29, 2015 - Chipmunks to Moose, Sun to Rain

Waking up knowing you have a problem with the bus isn't the greatest feeling, but we were optimistic. The sun was shining and the frost was melting quickly as the sun rose up over the Sleeping Giant out in Thunder Bay. A very nice morning... usually we wake up to clouds and end in sun, but this was not your usual day. The repair guy came out at 10am. A young fellow, plays hockey you know. Been to Toronto once to see a game. After talking for half an hour, we steered him to fix our problem... the slide that won't move. Seems he's a...

Apr 16, 2015 - Day 250 - Thunder Bay to Wawa

Took our time getting away this morning - enjoying the fact that we had electricity and could use our coffee maker. Athough we had no water on the site, the KOA manager allowed us to fill our tank from the office outdoor tap, which was really nice. Winter has clearly not let go of its grip on northern Ontario. There was a lot of snow along the side of the road and only the fast moving water was free of ice, including Lake Superior. Even at this time of the year, however, covered with ice, Superior is an amazing body of water - the largest...
