Oct 14, 2018 - guangzhou part 2

What a whirlwind 36 hour experience Hong Kong Island provided. My adrenaline was flowing as the intensity of that city grabbed my brain and took me away from the routine in Communist China where the people are so simple and pleasant. We were impulsed with tons of shopping (LuLu Lemon/Brandy Melville/Lush) and many modern conveniences! I am happy to have returned to another full week of 12 "spinny" table meals, 11 more tennis practice sessions, 6 fitness sessions and 2 massages. Guangzhou and the tennis academy my dad is working at and I am...

Oct 14, 2018 - my global perspective

My Global Perspective Ryan Wuhrman Prior to visiting the far East, the only exposure I have had to Asian customs was in my Mandarin class at Palm Beach Day Academy and an occasional visit to the Panda Express down the street. I used to despise taking this class when I was younger and often made fun of the language with my friends, “Hurry up! We are going to be late to ching-chong-chinese”; middle school was nearing when I began to change my thinking and realized how learning Chinese would set me apart rather than being one of the millions...

Nov 11, 2017 - Off to visit Landsa and Emma.

Today was my first excursion out of town, for this visit. I had tickets for trains to get to Guangzhou South Railway station. The first one, which was on the local light rail left Zhaoqing at 11.45. This took me to Dinghu East Station, where I crossed to the Zhaoqing East station, on the high speed train, from Guangzhou to Wuzhou in Guangxi province. I had been messaging my former student Jane, to find out the best way to get to the railway station, and she offered to call me a car to pick me up when I was ready. So I left here about 10.45,...

Nov 7, 2017 - Delhi, India to Guangzhou, China

Tuesday 7th November 2017 Delhi to Sydney via Guangzhou China Down to breakfast at the hotel this morning and Vikas, our travel rep, was there to meet us and have a chat to us about the trip this past week. Our lovely driver Sanju was here to take us to the hotel, having driven back to Delhi yesterday from Bikaner. He dropped us safely at the airport and we farewelled him again, then checked in and waited for flight to leave at about 12:30pm. Two problems then appeared to prevent us leaving on time. First there was very thick smog today...

Jun 6, 2017 - Swayambhunath and departing Nepal

Our last two nights in Nepal were spent at the Kathmandu Eco Hotel, a bit of luxury in the middle of Thamel. Costing 35000 rupee including breakfast per night. Our room `Mandala` included prayer wheels, ornately hand painted walls and ceiling, parquetry floor, A/C and a bath tub with a shower with hot water. One night we ate ate the Yak restaurant and again had Tibetan hot millet beer but it wasn`t as good as the beer in Pokhara. On our last day we visited the Swayambhunath stupa, or monkey temple. This is a large complex sited on the top...

May 17, 2017 - Thamel - the noisy tourist hub

We are at Hotel Potala for two nights and our location is very central, being in the heart of Thamel which is the main tourist area. There are bars, restaurants and souvenir shops all around and the sound of music continues till around midnight. Yes truly party central. Grae's long hair invites offers of marijuana or hashish, nice! Our room is basic with a very narrow double bed, tv, wardrobe and side table. We have an ensuite with a shower, western toilet and tiny corner basin. The shower is not enclosed so the whole ensuite gets wet. The...

Nov 29, 2013 - A Short Stop in China

Our flight left Kathmandu on time and we arrived in Guangzhou, China 45 minutes early. Must have had a good tail wind! We had originally been scheduled to have a layover of 7 hours and 50 minutes and were not looking forward to sitting in an airport, where a cup of coffee costs $10, for that long. To our surprise, when we reached immigration, the officer said that because our layover was now over 8 hours, we had the option of a free hotel room if we wanted it. We did! China now has a new rule that if you've got a layover of 72 hours or...

Flight delayed 6 hours, Sat on runway for 2 hours and the flight that should've taken 45 minutes was in the air for 3 hours. Apparently we were traveling the same path as a typhoon. Suppose to arrive in Guangzhou at around 6 but ended up getting to our hotel about 3 am.

May 17, 2013 - Off and running

We've recovered from our misadventure in Causeway Bay and have bought tickets for the first leg of our journey, Hung Hom to Guangzhou East. We had originally intended going straight through to Yueyang but have decided to stop in Guangzhou for a few days. K's sister, who lives in Guangzhou, was planning to meet up with us in HK but got detained (!) in China and was unable to travel to HK. Luckily we are flexible enough in our travel arrangements to be able to change our schedule less than a week in to our trip! We could never have foreseen...

Feb 26, 2013 - Huang Pu, China (Guangzhou)

We spent the day in China's third largest city, Guangzhou. It was an amazing contrast of "old China" traditions with old temples/pagodas and open local markets and the "new China" with towering Skyscrapers most dissapearing into the fog/smog at the top. It is simply amazing how they fit so many people in such tight quarters. The government apartmant buildings are subsidized and the average square footage is about 600 sq feet with hundreds of units per in these amazing high rise buildings! Cheryl suffered through another family style asian...
