Jun 12, 2014 - Days 298 to 300 - Pasto & Popayan, Colombia

Arriving in Pasto at 5.30pm on Tuesday 10th June, it was too late to head on to Popayan, so a night in Pasto was on the cards. Pasto is in no way a tourist spot; it is an industrial Colombian town. Fortunately, a fellow traveller also left the bus in Pasto…Andreas from Norway, so we teamed up and found a pretty rough and ready hotel close to the bus station; at least it was relatively cheap! As I said, Pasto itself is not a place for the tourists so, after a long (30 minute) walk to the centre through some very dodgy looking areas, it was a...

May 6, 2014 - Salento to Popayan, Colombia

Tuesday 6th May 2014 Salento to Popayan, Colombia A driving day today. Left Salento at about 8:00am and drove through mountainous countryside past Cali and south to Popayan, arriving there at about 3:30pm. There was a little rain today and the country, although very green, was not as spectacular as the driving days previously from Bogota. Eleven presidents of Colombia have come from this town. It is a very busy shopping town and there are lots of people around. All of the old town has whitewashed buildings and around the main square...

Aug 11, 2012 - Popayan Cali cartagena tolu

Ok I'll zoom through my 6 days in the south of Colombia. Pretty Un eventful. Cali for one night, nothing was going on since it was Sunday, so I wondered and found some gross chicken. Fried. They give plastic gloves to eat it with so your hands don't get greasy. A bit of Olympics then the next day to popayan. Also proved to be a quiet city. Most everyone was unsocial so I had a lot of quiet time. Walked around town, pedicure, much needed. So much dirt and dead skin came off my feet, I was embarrassed. Pretty town in the mountains. Colonial...

Jun 25, 2012 - The final country

Border crossing! We were expecting long delays and lots of check the reality was quickly out and even more quickly into Colombia with a cheap meal of soup and meat? thrown in. As per usual the vegetable soup was delicious but also as per usual no meat just meant that it only had chicken in it - our vegetarians weren't impressed. Ipiales our next stop just across the border has one saving grace about 17kms out of town is Santuario de las Lajas a wedding cake church set on the side of a canyon in a place where an image of the virgin Mary was...

Jan 9, 2012 - Popayan, Columbia

Yesterday was a down day, I was exhausted. Two nights in noisy cheap hotels did me in! I pretty much did nothing until about 9 when I went to dinner. After that I went to the central park and shot pictures. I don’t know if I have ever seen such a tasteful Christmas lighting display. This is a very beautiful city; it is a lot like Trujillo, Peru. I will do the same tonight except I will use the little camera. This hotel is an old mansion with not a lot of rooms. As far as I know, besides myself, there is only a young couple and an old lady...

Jan 8, 2012 - Popayan, Columbia

1-8-12 SUN After I wrote the last time (Friday morning) I continued to search for a hotel. The third one that I tried the receptionist told me every place was sold out because the President was visiting Tulcan. I was considering backtracking to Ibarra 2 ½ hours. Pasto is the town with the festival and it is five hours. The next town is Popayan which is eight more hours and the LP doesn’t recommend travel on this route at night. Then I remembered Ipiales just across the border. After the border formalities and a short taxi ride into town I...

Mar 14, 2011 - Villa de Leyva - Colombia

March 13, 2010 I got up today to beautiful clear skies. The destination: ‘Villa de Leyva’. This is purportedly ‘one of the most beautiful colonial villages in all Colombia’. And they are RIGHT! It’s a lot like Antigua Guatemala – only smaller. At least centro is smaller. I am suspect that there is a lot of Gringos here. On the way out of Bogota I was pulled over by the police – check point. No problem. I gave them my DL, Sura, and temporary importation doc. Not good enough. The rookie cop in training want to see my document that show that...

Mar 26, 2010 - Lazing around

I'm still in Villa de Leyva, leaving tomorrow for San Gil. The last few days have been rather lazy. I changed hotel yesterday because I got scared by the aggressive demeanour of a dog on the way to my other hostel which was rather out of the way. Now I'm right in the centre of town and can go out for dinner easily. So what do I do all day? Eat, drink, read the paper (harder to find than you would expect, and I'm talking about a Spanish paper here), look around shops, sit in the park, etc. My main frustration is that places always seem to be...
