May 23, 2011 - Last day in Enger

Our last day in the Enger area was blessed with perfect weather. We took a drive out to a large farm (400 hectares). It is very old and comes complete with an old family cemetery. For contrast, they are building a methane electric facility to supply their power needs. We drove by lots of barley, wheat, sugar beets, corn, and potatoes. At home we had BBQ for dinner and some wonderful fresh strawberries. In the afternoon, we drove to a local spa town. Their claim to fame is the good air, which they create by pumping up warm mineral water and...

May 20, 2011 - More time around Enger

Wednesday we went to an open air museum with buildings from the area that have been salvaged and brought together. There were traditional farm houses going back to the 1600’s. The horses and cows shared the space with the humans. The cow stalls were along the left wall, and the horses along the right, with an open area in the middle so that the wagon could be driven in and the harvest stored in the loft above. At the far end of the barn was the farmer’s home, with an open fire for cooking, and the eating table, cupboard and sink. There were...

Sep 11, 2010 - School

I was able to start school here last week. It's pretty cool seeing the way people here do things differently. Because of the public bussing system, I am able to leave school and come home when I have free hours with no classes. My schedule is very cool, and I have a total of 9 classes that I am taking at school, and then another 6 online- due to differences in the grading system over here. The grading is based almost 50% on participation during class, whether you are able to speak up and contribute to class discussion- this can be a problem...

Study Germany 10-11!

Apr 27, 2008 - Bielefeld, Germany

After a 2.5 hr journey from Berlin I reached Bielefeld at 9:30 pm. I looked around for something to eat, something quick. The waiter at the first restaurant I ventured into did not speak English and we could not understand each other's sing language. I walked down the block and stumbled on a joint called Doner Kebab. The Doner Kebab is a bun (not pita) stuffed with kebab (slow roasted meat), veggies, and some dressing. Quick, economical, filling, and delicious - the doner kebab became a staple for the rest of my trip.
