Jul 3, 2015 - A Train

52°25'46" N 11°46'53" E On A Train, somewhere in Germany I'm kind of writing today as we go, it's a day of travel and thought, right now it's 1:18 pm and we are on the first of two trains to Berlin that will have us arriving early Saturday morning. This morning began with breakfast and packing up to say goodbye to Amsterdam. The fun part was then getting our bags, day packs and backpacks, getting on our bikes, and riding into the city from the hostel to return the bikes. When you have an extra 30 pounds total strapped to your body, your...

Apr 5, 2007 - home sweet home

I left Hong Kong with a great deal of anticipation. The flight would be a long time and some headspace alone for me ( 12 hrs) during which I hoped to have the chance to catch up on my written journal, which had seriously lapsed, and to reflect on my journey and experiences in China. I was sad to leave, I admit, but also excited to be going home, and back to David and my friends, and a 'new/old' life in Germany. The flight was easy and I slept a lot. In Heathrow I treated myself to a packet of mini eggs and a coffee from Pret a manger. I...

Perrin's Big Trip

Oct 22, 2006 - Farewell party Weekend

Very busy weekend, with a Party on Friday, for me and Alex leaving and Dee and Simon's Birthday. It was great, we had too much food, and lots of people, if you want to see all the pictures click here. So then, with fully loaded hangovers, David and I had David's Friends Rob, Rob and John, came to stay. We went for a slap up meal at Schumachers brewery, my favourite! we had a huge platter to share, consisting of Mashed potato (kartoffelpuree) Sauerkraut (of course) gammon steaks, Sausages, and Schweinehaxe (roasted pig knuckle) sounds a bit...

Perrin's Big Trip

Sep 11, 2006 - Up the Rhine to Dusseldorf

We woke this morning as the ship docked to let passengers go to Arnhem. We went for an excellent breakfast where we sat beside a couple who, we discovered by accident, had been on the same Holland America cruise on the Mediterranean that we had enjoyed last year, and apparently there is a third couple who were also on it - it sure is a small world! We then enjoyed a lazy morning on the sundeck as the "Elegant Lady" sailed in the sunshine past an industrial area of Germany, passing power plants, steel works and pharmaceutical plants,...

Jul 6, 2006 - Gelsenkirchen, Germany (England vs. Portugal)

Not much more to add from Cologne except the fans were much drunker (the English fans at least). I did have the distinct pleasure of staying at a nice hotel which recharged my batteries (thank you Mom). Portugal's soccer team was also staying there which was another nice treat! I'll post on Paris tomorrow!

Sep 22, 2004 - Roving through the Ruhrgebiet

Wednesday the 22nd after morning class those of us strong and determined enough to brave the weather, loaded up the busses and headed north of Bonn to the Ruhrgebiet (Ruhr Region) of Germany so named because of Ruhr river runs directly through it. During the industrial age, this area was a major boomtown when coal and iron were discovered here. And it was thanks to this region that Germany held out so well in the World Wars. We first traveled to Duisburg where we were given a soggy tour of an ironworks and steel mill. This sight now plays...
